Child Safety

Protecting Child Passengers

Each year, many children are injured or killed in vehicle crashes because they are
either unrestrained or not properly restrained. In fact, vehicle crashes are the
number one cause of death of children aged 12 and under.
To reduce the number of child deaths and injuries, infants and children should be
properly restrained when they ride in a vehicle.

WARNING
3
Children who are unrestrained or
improperly restrained can be seriously
injured or killed in a crash.
Any child too small for a seat belt should be
properly restrained in an approved child
restraint system. A larger child should be
properly restrained with a seat belt, using a
booster seat if necessary.
In many countries, the law requires all children aged 12
and under, and whose height are shorter than 150 cm
(60 inches) be properly restrained in a rear seat.
In many countries, it is required to use an officially
approved and suitable child restraint system for
transporting a child on any passenger seat. Check
your local legal requirement.
European models
Child restraint systems must meet UN Regulation No. 44
or No. 129 or the regulations of the subject countries.
2 Selecting a Child Restraint System P. 69
Except European models
We recommend that child restraint systems meet UN
Regulation No. 44 or No. 129, or the regulations of
the subject countries.
