ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM CARE
Your Falcon's engine cooling system needs more
maintenance than just an occasional
filling
with
water to keep it operating
properly.
Frequently,
and particularly after you've driven for
considerable distances at
high
speeds, check the
front of the radiator for bugs,
leaves,
papers,
etc.,
that might restrict the flow of air through the radi-
ator and cause overheating. These obstructions can
easily be flushed out by spraying cold water
from
a hose through the rea
r
of the radiator.
Check fo
r
leaks in the radiator and at the
hoses,
and
have them
fi
xed immediately. Cracked and leaky
hoses should be replaced. The fan belt should be
replaced if it is frayed or otherwise
worn.
Drain the cooling system at
least
twice
a
yea
r,
preferably
just
before summer and winter. Complete
draining means opening the drains at the bottom of
the radiator and on the engine cylinder block.
Discard the anti-freeze that was used during the
winter. If the drained coolant is very dirty, clean
the system with FoMoCo Regular or Heavy-Duty
Cooling System Cleanser.
Permanent-type anti-freeze is recommended for
cold -weather protection of your Falcon 's cooling
system.
However,
if you intend to use alcohol or a
methanol-type anti -freeze, then you must have the
standard high-temperature thermostat replaced
with one rated
for
lower cooling system tempera
-
tures. Don't mix permanent-type anti-freeze with
the methanol type.
Your Ford Dealer can
give
your Falcon complete
year-round
cooling
system service to prevent
trouble before it
starts.
