Replacing the system board

Attention: Do not open your computer or attempt any repair before reading and understanding the Chapter
1 "Read this first: Important safety information" on page 1 .
Note: Each computer has a unique Vital Product Data (VPD) code stored in the nonvolatile memory on the
system board. After you replace the system board, the VPD must be updated. To update the VPD, see
"Updating and recovering the BIOS" on page 43.
To replace the system board, do the following:
1. Remove any media from the drives and turn off all connected devices and the computer. Then,
disconnect all power cords from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connected to the
computer.
2. Remove the computer cover. See "Removing the computer cover" on page 48.
3. Remove the front bezel. See "Replacing the front bezel" on page 48.
4. Remove the optical drive. See "Replacing the optical drive" on page 49.
5. Remove the storage drive. See "Replacing the storage drive" on page 51.
6. Remove the card reader. See "Replacing the card reader" on page 53.
7. Remove the front audio and USB assembly. See "Replacing the front audio and USB assembly" on
page 54.
8. Remove the system fan assembly. See "Replacing the system fan assembly" on page 55.
9. Remove the thermal sensor. See "Replacing the thermal sensor" on page 57.
10. Remove the coin-cell battery. See "Replacing the coin-cell battery" on page 60.
11. Remove the memory modules. See "Replacing a memory module" on page 65.
12. Remove the heat sink assembly. See "Replacing the heat sink and fan assembly" on page 61.
13. Remove the Wi-Fi card. See "Replacing the Wi-Fi card" on page 68.
14. Remove the PCI Express card. See "Replacing a PCI Express card" on page 66.
15. Record the cable routing and cable connections, and then disconnect all cables from the system board.
