Monitoring Fan Tray Status

The CMM constantly monitors fan operation. If any of the switch's fan trays or any of the fans in a fan
tray unexpectedly shuts down, the CMM sends out a trap and the appropriate fan tray LED (e.g., FAN 1,
FAN 2, FAN 3) on the CMM's front panel shows amber.
Note. To check the switch's current fan tray status, use the

Fan-1 and Fan-2 are the fans in the left-hand chassis fan tray; Fan-3 and Fan-4 are the fans in the right-
hand chassis fan tray; and Fan-5, Fan-6, and Fan-7 are the fans in the fabric fan tray. For more informa-
tion about these displays, see the "Chassis Management and Monitoring Commands" chapter in the
OmniSwitch CLI Reference Guide.

Fan Redundancy

In the event that one fan quits in either front (chassis) fan tray, the remaining fan will continue running;
switch operations are not disrupted. (A warning message will be sent every five minutes.) However, if
both fans in one front fan tray quits unexpectedly, then you must replace the fan tray within 1 minute
before the switch begins to overheat and begin the power-down cycle.
In addition, in the event one fan in the front (chassis) tray and one fan in the rear (fabric) tray fails or two
fans in the rear tray fail all Network Interface (NI) modules will shut down in 60 seconds.
In the event that one or two fans in the rear (fabric) fan tray quits unexpectedly, the remaining fans will
continue running; switch operations are not disrupted. (A warning message will be sent every five
minutes.) However, if all three fans in this fan tray quits unexpectedly then you must replace this fan tray
within 2 minutes before the switch begins to overheat and begin the power-down cycle.
Note. For information on emergency replacement of the fan tray, refer to
page
2-31.
Storing Backup Fan Trays. It is a good idea to keep at least one backup chassis (front) fan tray and at
least one backup fabric (back) fan tray in your data facility or other hardware storage area.
