The AlphaServer SC20 system is a
distributed memory, parallel
supercomputer that scales up to 256
Alpha 21264 (EV68) processors to
deliver incredible sustained
performance for large-scale
applications. It is based on 2-processor
AlphaServer DS20L nodes and an ultra-
low-latency, high-bandwidth
interconnect with an integrated software
package for management and
application development.
AlphaServer SC20 systems consist of:
• Compute Building Blocks (CBBs)
• Interconnect Building Blocks (IBBs)
• Management Building Blocks (MBB)
• Storage Building Blocks (SBBs)
Compute Building Blocks (CBB)
CBB is a rack that includes specially
configured AlphaServer DS20L nodes.
Each node includes:
-Two Alpha 21264 (EV68) 833-MHz CPU
with 4-MB cache each
-One AlphaServer SC Elan adapter card
-Tru64 UNIX
Some SC40/SC45 CBBs can be added
for mixed configurations.
Interconnect Building Block (IBB)
IBB includes a multi-port switch using
technology from Quadrics
Supercomputers World, as well as a
Management Network and console
network components.
Management Building Block
MBB consists of one Management
Server, based on a DS20E or DS10,
and also includes management network
and console network components.
Storage Building Blocks (SBB)
SBB includes
- Dual HSG80 RAID Controller
- Required Storage Software
AlphaServer SC System Software
provides the utilities and libraries
required to operate and manage the
AlphaServer SC20.
Optional AlphaServer SC Development
Software provides a full suite of tools for
technical software development,
including Compaq Fortran, Compaq
C++ and Developer's Toolkit for Tru64
UNIX.
Warranty is 1-year onsite, 5 day x 9-
hour warranty with next business day
response.
The AlphaServer SC20 includes
integration and installation.

  • Page 2 Preface: AlphaServer SC Architecture • Each AlphaServer SC20 system consists of at least one and up to five Cluster File System Domains (CFS Domains, or Domains) built from system building blocks. These building blocks include the Interconnect, Compute/Base, Storage, and Management Building Blocks.
  • Page 3 In any case, the total number of selected nodes must be ordered in accordance with the IBB size (16 or 128 nodes maximum). Step 1a − Select the number of AlphaServer SC20 CBBs for large systems, or systems expected to grow more than 16 nodes – Mandatory for systems built with IBB 128 (Step 3) •...
