passenger￿protection￿in￿a￿side￿collision￿is￿and￿remains￿a￿stable￿vehicle￿structure￿to￿reduce￿intrusion.
A￿further￿step￿in￿optimizing￿passenger￿protection￿during￿side￿collisions￿was￿use￿of￿a￿side￿airbag￿and,
since￿5/97,￿a￿head￿airbag.
2.7.2.￿Safety￿tests/accident￿analysis
Numerous￿safety￿tests￿are￿performed￿before￿a￿BMW￿vehicle￿is￿introduced￿on￿the￿market.￿These￿crash
tests￿serve￿to￿ensure￿that￿the￿legal￿regulations￿are￿met￿in￿all￿applicable￿countries￿and￿that￿all￿consumer
protection￿requirements￿are￿satisfied.
In￿addition￿crash￿tests￿are￿performed￿on￿the￿basis￿of￿information￿obtained￿from￿BMW￿accident
research.￿BMW￿accident￿research￿has￿revealed￿a￿high￿percentage￿of￿frontal￿collisions￿with￿trees.￿For
this￿reason￿BMW￿performs￿a￿frontal￿post￿crash￿test￿to￿optimize￿the￿vehicle￿structure,￿even￿though
there￿are￿no￿laws￿requiring￿this.
Passenger￿safety￿in￿BMW￿vehicles￿is￿therefore￿far￿above￿the￿legal￿regulations￿specified￿worldwide.
