passengerprotectioninasidecollisionisandremainsastablevehiclestructuretoreduceintrusion.
Afurtherstepinoptimizingpassengerprotectionduringsidecollisionswasuseofasideairbagand,
since5/97,aheadairbag.
2.7.2.Safetytests/accidentanalysis
NumeroussafetytestsareperformedbeforeaBMWvehicleisintroducedonthemarket.Thesecrash
testsservetoensurethatthelegalregulationsaremetinallapplicablecountriesandthatallconsumer
protectionrequirementsaresatisfied.
InadditioncrashtestsareperformedonthebasisofinformationobtainedfromBMWaccident
research.BMWaccidentresearchhasrevealedahighpercentageoffrontalcollisionswithtrees.For
thisreasonBMWperformsafrontalpostcrashtesttooptimizethevehiclestructure,eventhough
therearenolawsrequiringthis.
