IBM RISC SYSTEM 6000 RUNNING AIX 3.2
FOREWORD
This application note describes the procedure to use when attaching to an IBM RISC System 6000 running AIX 3.2.
Instructions cover installing the M2488 tape drive hardware and configuring the system to communicate with the
M2488. The system manuals provide detailed descriptions of many of the operations performed in this application
note.
PROCEDURE
You must be superuser to perform the operations in this procedure.

Shut down the IBM RS/6000 and power the unit off.

Ensure that the M2488 is properly terminated and connect the M2488 tape drive to the RS/6000's SCSI
controller. The M2488 Cartridge Tape Drive Product Guide (part number CG00000-0115xx) may be
useful for configuration of the M2488. Set the SCSI target ID to either 4 or 5. Address 4 will be used for
the examples in this application note.

Power on the M2488 and wait for the power cycle to complete.

Turn the RS/6000 AC power on and reboot the system. The key should be set to the "Normal" position.

Log on as root.

During the boot sequence, the system adds the M2488 to its customized configuration table as a defined
tape drive. Verify that the system has added the M2488.
From the aixterm command line, type smit, then choose:
CONNECTING THE M2488 TO AN
Select Devices
Select Tape Drive
Select List All Defined Tape Drives
TAPE APPLICATION NOTE
