Off-camera flash
With the flashgun removed from the
bracket as above, it can be d irected
t o w a r d t h e s u b j e c t f r o m a n y a n g l e w i t h i n
range of
the sensor's coiled cord to
p r o v i d e b e t t e r m o d e l i n g t h a n w i t h t h e
f l a t l i g h t i n g o f d i r e c t f l a s h . T h e f l a s n g u n
s h o u l d g e n e r a l l y b e p o i n t e d t o w a r d t h e
center of
the subject. Since the off-
c a m e r a f l a s h t e c h n i q u e p r o v i d e s d i r e c t
l i g h t o n t h e s u b j e c t , s p e c i a l c a r e i n
s e l e c t i n g t h e F - n u m b e r f o r u s e w i t h i t i s
general ly not necessary.
Both of these techniques can of course
b e e m p l o y e d a t m a x i m u m f l a s h d u r a t i o n
i n m a n u a l o p e r a t i o n w i t h o u t t h e s e p a r a t e
sensor.

For best results in this kind of ooera-
t i o n , a f u l l y c h a r g e d N i - C d o r p r e f e r a b l y a
f r e s h 5 1 0 v b a t t e r y p a c k s h o u l d b e u s e d ,
w i t h a r e p l a c e m e n t a t h a n d i f n e e d e d f o r
e x t e n d e d o p e r a t i o n . A m e d i u m t o l a r g e
l e n s a p e r t u r e s h o u l d b e c h o s e n , a n d f l a s h -
to-subject distances should be as short as
p r a c t i c a b l e .
A s h o r t t e s t s e q u e n c e w i l l d e t e r m i n e
w h e t h e r c o n d i t i o n s a r e a l l o w i n g p r o p e r
o p e r a t i o n o r m u s t b e a d j u s t e d .
