On this model, 1 GB (read "gigabyte") is equivalent to 1
billion bytes. The larger the number, the larger the disc
space.

you can check the disc name recorded on the

"Disc Name" (DVD only): Labels a DVD.
Enter the disc name in the "Input Disc Name"
display (page 40).
"Protect Disc" (DVD-RW in VR mode only):
Protects all titles on the disc. To cancel the
protection, select "Don't Protect."
"Erase All" (HDD/DVD+RW/DVD-RW
only): Erases all titles on the disc (except the
protected titles).
"Format" (HDD/DVD+RW/DVD-RW only):
Erases all contents of the disc to make a blank
disc. For DVD-RWs, select a recording
format (VR or Video) according to your
needs.
z Hints
• You can set protection for individual titles (page 65).
• By reformatting, you can change the recording format
on DVD-RWs, or record again on DVD-RWs (Video
mode) that have been finalized.
Note
You can enter up to 64 characters for a DVD's disc name.
The disc name may not appear when the disc is played on
other DVD equipment.

Finalizing is necessary when you play discs
recorded with this recorder on other DVD
equipment.
When you finalize a DVD+RW, DVD-RW
(Video mode), DVD+R, or DVD-R, a DVD menu
will be automatically created, which can be
displayed on other DVD equipment.
Before finalizing, check the differences between
the disc types in the table below.
Differences between the disc types
Discs are automatically finalized when

removed from the recorder. However,
you may need to finalize the disc for
certain DVD equipment, or if the
recording time is short. You can edit or
record on the disc even after finalizing.
Finalizing is unnecessary when playing

finalize the disc, especially if the

z Hints
• If "DTS" is set to "Off" in Audio Setup, the DTS track
selection option will not appear on the screen even if
the disc contains DTS tracks (page 92).
• When "Auto Display" is set to "On" (default) in
Options Setup (page 97), playback information
automatically appears when the recorder is turned on,
etc.
Notes
• The recorder can only display the first level of a CD's
text, such as the disc name.
• The letters or symbols that cannot be displayed are
replaced with "*."
Checking the playing/remaining
time
You can view the playing or time information
displayed on the TV screen and the front panel
display.
Press TIME/TEXT repeatedly.
The displays differ depending on the disc type or
playing status.

The recorder starts finalizing the disc.
To unfinalize a DVD-RW (VR mode)
If you cannot record or edit on a DVD-RW (VR
mode) that has been finalized with other DVD
equipment (a message appears), unfinalize the
disc by selecting "Unfinalize" in step 3 above.
z Hint
You can check whether the disc has been finalized or not.
If you cannot select "Finalize" in step 3 above, the disc
has already been finalized.
Notes
• Depending on the condition of the disc, recording, or
the DVD equipment, discs may not play even if the
discs are finalized.
• The recorder may not be able to finalize the disc if it
was recorded on another recorder.
