Hum and Noise

In most installations, the RSX-03 will provide
extremely quiet operation. However, in any
audio/video system with multiple components,
there is the potential for hum and noise to be
picked up and amplified by the system. There
are two types of hum and noise. The first is a
higher pitched "interference", often caused
by faulty light dimmer switches or flourescent
fixtures. The second is a low pitched 50 Hz
or 60 Hz "hum", usually the result of ground
loops. Ground loops occur with multiple elec-
trical paths back to the ground connector on
the AC power outlet, for example, when two
components are plugged into a wall outlet
and connected together with audio or video
signal cables. Ground loop problems can be
difficult to troubleshoot and/or solve.
If you hear a higher pitched noise
or "buzz":
• Move from room to room turnng off and
on all flourescent lighting fixtures. If the
noise disappears, you have identified the
faulty fixture. Replacing the bulb or ballast
may solve the problem.
• Test all lighting dimmers in the house. If
turning off a dimmer cures the noise, you
have identified the faulty dimmer.
If you hear a low pitched up, test for
ground loops:
• If the noise occurs only with a turntable,
make sure the ground wire from the turn-
table is properly connected to the ground
screw on the back of the RSX-03.
• Try removing one component at a time
from the system, by removing all audio
and video cables to the component. If the
noise stops, that component may be intro-
ducing a ground loop into the system.
• Contact your authorized Rotel retailer for
expert advice on solving ground loop
problems. Plugging all of the components
into a dedicated AC power strip with line
filtering may help. The use of special iso-
lation power supply or transformer may
be required.
• Do not defeat the ground pin on the
power cords from any component with a
three-prong AC plug.
