Cisco Systems® announces the end of life of the Cisco® Catalyst® 4000 Layer 3 Services
Module. The last day to order the Cisco Catalyst 4000 Series Layer 3 Services Module is
December 9, 2003. Customers will continue to receive support from the Cisco Technical
Assistance Center (TAC) until December 7, 2008. Table 1 describes the end-of-life milestones,

Customers are encouraged to migrate to the Cisco Catalyst 4500 Supervisor Engine IV, which
provides nonblocking Layer 2–4 switching at 64 Gbps and 48 Mpps. The Cisco Catalyst 4500
Supervisor Engine IV also supports existing protocols such as Internetwork Packet Exchange
(IPX) and AppleTalk in software with performance ranging from 80 Kpps to 90 Kpps in Cisco
IOS® Software Release 12.1(13)EW. To address the loss of ports from migrating from a Cisco
Catalyst 4000 Series Layer 3 Services Module to a WS-X4515, customers are encouraged to
migrate to any desired Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet card offered within the Cisco Catalyst
4000 Series.
