5-1. Precautions for Computer-
Connected Operation
W h e n c o n n e c t i n g t h e t r a n s c e i v e r w i t h a c o m p u t e r , c h e c k
the following points.
1 . Are the connections correct?
T h e t r a n s c e i v e r o u t p u t s h o u l d b e c o n n e c t e d t o t h e
c o m p u t e r i n p u t a n d t h e t r a n s c e i v e r i n p u t t o t h e c o m -
puter output.
Example;
Transceiver's ;'eceive data - Computer's receive data
Transceiver's RTS - Computer's CTS
2. ls the computer's transmisson rate 4800 BPS (bits per
s e c o n d ) 7
3. ls the computer's bit configuration correct?
1 start bit, 8 character bits, 2 stop bits, no parity.
5-2. Control Operation
Most computers handle data in the form of "bits", and "by-
t e s " . A b i t i s t h e s m a l l e s t p i e c e o f i n f o r m a t i o n t h a t t h e
computer can handle. A byte is composed of 8 bits. This
is the most convenient form for most computer data. This
data may be sent in the form of either serial or parallel data
strings. The parallel mode is faster, but more complicated,

w h i l e t h e s e r i a l f o r m i s s l o w e r i t r e q u i r e s l e s s c o m p l i c a t e d
equipment, and therefore is less expensive.

o f c o n t r o l l i n g w h e n t h i s d a t a t r a n s f e r w i l l o c c u r . W e d o n ' t
w a n t t h e c o m p u t e r a n d t r a n s c e i v e r s e n d i n g i n f o r m a t i o n a t
t h e s a m e t i m e ! T h i s i s c o n t r o l l e d b v t h e R T S a n d t h e C T S

above and below TTL levels, and must be converted to
