folder for earlier versions or those for Mk-I radios.
The preferred software for updating the channel memory is Chirp, available from the program
originators site

.
There are Windows, Mac (using KK7DS Python runtime) and two 'flavors' of Linux versions
(Fedora, Ubuntu) available for download.
Drivers for the Prolific USB chip used in many programming cables can also be found in the
Files/Software folder. The small CD that comes with the USB programming cable may or may
not be the newest version, or even be readable by your own computer. Note that the newest
versions may not work (on Windows XP at least) for you, many have found that older driver
versions are required for the USB programming cable to operate. The older driver version
4.0.100 may be required if you have problems.
Prolific website

has many versions for
download.

Programming cable troubles
The "official" UV-3R USB programming cable seems to use the Prolific PL2303 chip. The
problem with this USB-to-serial bridge component is that there is a lot of confusion around the
software drivers required for the Microsoft operating systems. In the Yahoo! Group files section
you can find archives with drivers that have been reported to work on latest Microsoft Windows
OS'es.
If you are building your own cable consider using an adapter based on CP2102 USB-to-serial
bridge, which seems to be more compatible with Microsoft OS'es.
What is the difference between UV-3R software and
Chirp?
A comparison of these two programs finds:
Chirp programs each memory independently including - Freq, Tone mode, tone, DTCS
code, mode, duplex (+ - duplex shift), offset, wide/narrow fm, power - but
does not do the basic set-up programming.
