MINOR REPAIR TO THE COMPRESSOR

Operations to the clutch plate and hub, pulley and bear­
ing, and coil and housing are covered as " M inor" be­
cause they may be performed w ithout purging the system.
Servicing the shaft seal and pressure relief valve are
covered in " Major Repair Procedures" because the sys­
tem must be purged of Refrigerant-12.
Illustrations used in describing these operations show
the com pressor removed from the vehicle to illustrate the
various operations.
W hen servicing the compressor, remove the com po­
nents that prelim inary diagnosis indicates need servicing.
Refer to figure 1 for part name and location.
Keep the work area, tools and parts clean. Use Piston
Tray J 9402 (refer to " Special Tools" ) for parts removed
and for replacem ent parts.
When a com pressor is removed from the vehicle for
servicing, drain and measure the am ount of oil rem aining
in the compressor. After servicing, add new 525 viscosity
refrigerant oil to the compressor.

J 9396 Com pressor Holding Fixture
J 9399 Compressor Shaft Nut Socket

• Clamp J 9396 in a vise.
• C om pressor to J 9396. Secure with thum b screws
(figure 2).
1. Shaft nut (1) with J 9399.
• Hold the clutch plate and hub assem bly (2)
2. Clutch plate and hub assembly (2).
• Thread J 9401-A into the clutch plate and hub
• Hold the body of J 9401 with a winch and
3. Shaft key (36).
• Retain the shaft key (36) if usable.

with J 25030 (figure 2).

tighten the center screw into the rem over

All parts and replace as necessary.
