2.5 Inspection of Wheel Components

The wheel components, inner tube, tire, and rim are all crucial parts that
together help to maintain structural integrity of the dirt bike. It is vital that
these parts be examined closely prior to reconstruction and before each ride.

Inspection of Inner Tube

 Start the inspection by first filling the inner tube with a small amount of air.
 Once slightly inflated you should begin
squeezing the inner tube checking for leaks by:
 Listening for the leaking air
 Feeling for punctures or rough parts on the
tube
 Submerge a portion of the inner tube into
the soapy water used previously and
squeeze the tube while rotating the entire
tube through the water. When you see
bubbles you have found the source of the
leak.
 If your inner tube is punctured or shows signs of excessive wear replace
immediately.
 If the inner tube has a very minor puncture then you may attempt to
patch the leak, but it is highly recommended that you replace the inner
tube.

Inspection of Tire

 Inspect the tire by first checking the tread for excessive wear or tearing.
 Warning! Failure to properly patch a puncture could
cause a leak in your inner tube and a definite loss of
control over your motorcycle.
The tire in the picture to the left shows an
extreme amount of wear to the tread.
Your tire should never reach this amount
of wear without being replaced. Extreme
wear similar to what is shown can cause
violent tire blow outs resulting in the loss
of control of your motorcycle.
