The Emulex 10GbE Virtual Fabric Adapter II for IBM® System x® and Emulex 10GbE Integrated Virtual
Fabric Adapter II for System x are members of the IBM comprehensive networking portfolio of 10 Gb
Ethernet (10GbE) converged network adapters (CNAs). They deliver industry-leading performance and
scalability per watt, reducing requirements for power and cooling. Storage protocol offloads enable the
efficient use of computing resources and the support of more virtual machines per CPU, and reduce the
number of servers required to support data center demands. Furthermore, the capability to use fiber-optic
or twin-ax copper cabling allows you to deploy the fabric of your choice. The Emulex 10GbE Virtual Fabric
Adapter II is shown in Figure 1.

The Emulex 10GbE Virtual Fabric Adapter II and Emulex 10GbE Integrated Virtual Fabric Adapter II are
based on the Emulex OneConnect Universal Converged Network Adapter (UCNA) platform and include
support for Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) as a feature entitlement upgrade. iSCSI support is
planned to be available in 1Q 2012.
By using a common infrastructure for Ethernet and SANs, you can reduce capital expense for adapters,
switches, and cables; and operational expense for power, cooling, and IT administration.

    In Switch Independent Mode the adapter works with any 10 Gb Ethernet switch. Switch Independent  Mode offers the same capabilities as IBM Virtual Fabric Mode in terms of the number of vNICs and the bandwidth each can be configured to have. Switch Independent Mode extends the existing customer VLANs to the virtual NIC interfaces.
