ENGINE ADJUSTMENTS
NOTE:
WESTERBEKE recommends
that
the following engine
adjust-
ments be performed by a competent engine mechanic. The infonnation
below is provided to assist
the
mechanic.
OIL PRESSURE
The engine's oil pressure,is constantly monitored by the control
panel. The red light will illuminate and the generator will
shutdown if the oil pressure fall below 5 psi. Do not restart the
generator without checking the oil and finding the problem.
NOTE:
A-newly started, cold engine can have an oirpressure
reading upwards of 60 psi. A warmed engine can have an oil
pressure reading as low as 35 psi. These readings will vary
depending upon the temperature o/the engine and the load
placed on the generator.
LOW OIL PRESSURE
The specified safe minimum oil pressure is 4.3 - 1.4 psi(O.3 -
0.1 kg/cm
l
).
An
oil pressure of 5 PSI will shut the engine
down. A gradual loss of oil pressure usually indicates worn
bearings. For additional information on low oil pressure read-
ings, see the ENGINE TROUBLESHOOTING chart.
TESTING OIL PRESSURE
To test oil pressure, remove the oil gallery "T" plug and
install a mechanical oil pressure gauge in its place. After
warming up the engine, read the oil pressure gauge.

TESTING GLOW PLUGS
To inspect the plug, remove the electrical terminal connec-
tions, then unscrew or unclamp each plug from the
cylin~er
head. Thoroughly clean each plug's tip and threads with a
soft'lhrush and cleaning solution to remove alJ the carbon and
oil deposits. While cleaning, examine the tip for wear and
bum erosion; if
it
has eroded too much, replace the plug.
An
accurate way to test glow plugs is with an ohmmeter.
Touch one prod to the glow plug's wire connection, and the
other to the body of the glow plug, as shown. A good glow
plug will have a 0.4 0.6 ohm resistance. This method can be
used with the plug in or out of the engine. You can also use
an ammeter to test the power drain (5 - 6 amps per plug).
A
WARNING:
These glow plugs will become very hot
to the touch. Be careful not to burn your fingers when
testing the plugs.

TIP
+
Re-install the plugs in the engine and test them again. The
plugs should get very hot (at the terminal end) within 7 to 15
seconds. If the plugs don't heat up quickly, check for a short
circuit When reinstalling the glow plugs, use anti-seize com-
pound on the threads.
