    For first-time installation of your wireless router, refer to the NETGEAR Wireless Router Setup Manual. The Setup Manual explains how to launch the NETGEAR Smart Wizard on the Resource CD to step you through the procedure to connect your router, modem, and computers. The Smart Wizard will assist you in configuring your wireless settings and enabling wireless security for your network.

MAC address filtering adds an obstacle against unwanted access to your network by the general public, but the data broadcast over the wireless link is fully exposed.

This provides the most reliable security, and is easiest to implement, but it might not be compatible with older adapters. Note: Not all wireless adapters support WPA. Furthermore, client software is also required.

    3. Give the wireless network a name. The name is case-sensitive and can be up to 32 characters. The same name must be assigned to all wireless devices in your network. NETGEAR recommends that you change the name to a different value.

    The configuration settings of the WPN824N router are stored within the router in a configuration file. You can back up (save) this file and retrieve it later. NETGEAR recommends that you save your configuration file after you complete the configuration. If the router fails or becomes corrupted, or an administrator password is lost, you can easily re-create your configuration by restoring the configuration file.

This is called service blocking or port filtering. Services are functions performed by server computers at the request of client computers.

    The device name is a user-friendly name for the router. This name is shown in the Network on Windows Vista and the Network Explorer on all Windows systems. The Device Name field cannot be blank. The default name is WPN824N. This value controls the inactivity timer for the designated inbound ports. The inbound ports close when the inactivity time expires.
