California, Connecticut, Maine,
Massachusetts, Maryland, New
Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode
Island, Vermont and Washington
The following provisions apply to vehicles
which fail to pass the California, Connecticut,
Maine, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jer-
sey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island,
Vermont or Washington Smog Inspection.
Should your vehicle fail a smog check test
during the warranty period, you may choose
to have the vehicle repaired at any authorized
Volvo retailer. The authorized Volvo retailer
will make the necessary repairs within the
three (3) year/ 50,000-mile period so that the
vehicle will pass the inspection. After three
(3) years/50,000 miles, but before a period of
use of seven (7) years/70,000 miles, the au-
thorized Volvo dealer will repair or replace
only those parts listed on page 62. After sev-
en (7) years/70,000 miles, but before a period
of use of eight (8) years/80,000 miles, the au-
thorized Volvo retailer will cover only the cat-
alytic converter, engine control module, cen-
tral electronic module and on-board diag-
nostic device. PZEV vehicles identified on
page 32 of this booklet have all emissions
components covered for a period of fifteen
(15) years or 150,000 miles. Volvo will pay for
the repair unless the failure was caused by
abuse, neglect, improper maintenance, or
the use of leaded fuel or fuels not recom-
mended in your Owner's Manual or this
booklet. If the failure is covered under this
warranty, Volvo shall be liable for diagnostic
and repair expenses. If the failure is caused
by a combination of warrantable and non-
warrantable conditions, the owner shall not
be liable for the portion of diagnostic and re-
pair costs relating to the warrantable condi-
tion. If the failure is caused by a nonwarrant-
able condition, the vehicle owner shall be lia-
ble for all diagnostic and repair expenses,
but not to exceed the maximum permissible
under the inspection program. The owner
may choose to have the vehicle repaired at a
facility other than a Volvo retailer; however, if
a warrantable condition is found, the owner
must bring the vehicle to an authorized Volvo
retailer to have the repairs completed at no
cost for parts, labor, and diagnosis. Volvo will
not reimburse the owner for diagnostic costs
incurred at the unauthorized service facility
except in the case of an emergency.
