Advanced Shooting This chapter builds on Chapter 3 and introduces more ways to shoot creatively. The first half of this chapter explains how to use the <Tv >, <AM>, and <M> modes on the Mode Dial. All the functions explained in Chapter 3 can also be used in the <Tv>, <Av>, and <M>...
  • Page 3 Tv" Conveying the Subject's Movement You can either freeze the action or create motion blur with the <Tv> (Shutter-priority AE) mode on the Mode Dial. * <Tv> stands for Time value. Blurred motion Frozen action (Slow shutter speed: 1/30 sec.) (Fast shutter speed: 1/2000 sec.) Set the Mode Dial to <Tv>.
  • Page 4 Tv: Conveying the Subject's Movement To freeze the motion of a fast-moving subject Use a fast shutter speed such as 114000 sec. to 1/500 sec. To blur a running child or animal and convey an impression motion Use a medium shutter speed such as 1/250 sec. to 1/30 sec. Follow the moving subject through the viewfinder and press the shutter button to take the picture.
  • Page 5 Av" Changing the Depth of Field To blur the background or to make everything near and far look sharp, set the Mode Dial to <AM> (Aperture-priority AE) to adjust the depth of field (range of acceptable focus). * <Av > stands for Aperture value, which is the size of the diaphragm hole inside the lens.
  • Page 6 Changing the Depth of Field When using an aperture with a high f/number or shooting in low light scenes, note that camera shake can occur. A higher aperture f/number will make the shutter speed slower. Under low light, the shutter speed can be as long as 30 sec. In such cases, increase the ISO speed and hold the camera steady or use a tripod.

Auto Exposure Bracketing _" This feature takes exposure compensation a step further by varying the exposure automatically (up to +2 stops in 1/3-stop increments) with three shots as shown below. You can then choose the best exposure. This is called AEB (Auto Exposure Bracketing).
  • Page 15 Auto Exposure Bracketing* Follow steps 1 and 2 to turn off the AEB range display. The AEB setting will also be canceled automatically if the power switch is set to <OFF >, flash recycling is completed, etc. Using AEB with continuous shooting If Drive/self-timer is set to <Dj_j>...

  • Page 19: Auto Correctionof Brightnessand Contrast

Auto Correctionof Brightnessand Contrast* If the image comes out dark or the contrast is low, the brightness contrast can be corrected automatically. This function is called Auto Lighting Optimizer. The default setting is [Standard]. With JPEG images, the correction is applied when the image is captured.
  • Page 20: Setting Noise Reduction

Setting Noise Reduction _ This function reduces the noise generated in the image. Although noise reduction is applied at all ISO speeds, it is particularly effective at high ISO speeds. At low ISO speeds, the noise in the darker parts of the image (shadow areas) is further reduced.
  • Page 21 Setting Noise Reduction* When [Multi Shot Noise Reduction] is Set If you are handholding the camera, keep it steady to prevent camera shake. If there is significant misalignment in the image due to camera shake, or if you are shooting a moving subject, the noise reduction effect may be minimal.
  • Page 22 Setting Noise Reduction* Set the desired setting. Select the desired setting, then press <SET>. The setting screen closes and the menu will reappear. [Auto] For exposures of 1 sec. or longer, noise reduction is performed automatically if noise typical of long exposures is detected. This [Auto] setting is effective in most cases.
  • Page 23 Lens Peripheral Illuminati0n / Chromatic Aberration Correction Peripheral light fall-off is a phenomenon that makes the image corners look darker due to the lens characteristics. Color fringing along subject outlines is called chromatic aberration. Both lens aberrations can be corrected. RAW images can be corrected with Digital Photo Professional (provided software, p.366).

  • Page 31: Matching The Light Source

Matching the Light Source* The function adjusting the color tone so that white objects look white in the picture is called white balance (WB). Normally, the <B_> (Auto) setting will obtain the correct white balance. If natural-looking colors cannot be obtained with <B_>, you can select the white balance that matches the light source or set it manually by shooting a white object.
  • Page 32 Matching the Light Source* Select [Custom White Balance]. Under the [1_12] tab, select [Custom White Balance], then press <SET>. The custom white balance selection screen will appear. Setting the Color Reproduction Range _ The range of reproducible colors is called the color space. With this camera, you can set the color space for captured images to sRGB or Adobe RGB. For normal shooting, sRGB is recommended. In Basic Zone modes, sRGB is set automatically. Select [Color space].
  • Page 36: Mirror Lockup To Reduce Camera Shake

Mirror Lockup to Reduce Camera Shake _ The camera's mechanical shake caused by the reflex mirror action can blur images taken with a super telephoto lens or close-up (macro) lens. In such cases, mirror Iockup is effective. Mirror Iockup is enabled by setting [5: Mirror Iockup] to [1 : Enable] in [t'4: Custom Functions (C,Fn)] (p.302).
