  • Page 12: Using This Guide

Using this guide This document is intended to provide guidance to system administrators who are planning their Alcatel-Lucent OmniTouch My Teamwork installation. It assumes some familiarity with basic networking and telephony concepts and terms. This guide provides both explicit planning checklists and background information on aspects of ACS’s networking requirements and system design, including the following:...
  • Page 13: Facility Planning

To connect the server to the network Requirements for a third-party hardware server If you choose to buy your Alcatel-Lucent OmniTouch My Teamwork server from a vendor other than Alcatel-Lucent, you must select one of the following enterprise-class or small business servers.
  • Page 14: Minimum Specifications

Important! update during the ACS/My Teamwork installation process. Small and Medium Business Use a small to medium business server for Alcatel-Lucent OmniTouch My Teamwork deployments that require up to 120 concurrent audio and data conferencing ports and 3,000 IM users.
  • Page 15: Hardware Setup

.................................................... Hardware setup Although the exact hardware varies, all Alcatel-Lucent OmniTouch My Teamwork servers must have two Ethernet ports. The primary Ethernet port (eth0) is used to connect the server to your network. The secondary port (eth1) is used for internal connections, which vary according to your configuration.
  • Page 16 Facility Planning To connect the server to the network .................................................... Recording requires approximately 8000 bytes/second Note: (480 kbytes/minute or 0.5 MB/minute). When you are recording a presentation with audio, an insignificant amount of space is needed for the presentation because a history of time stamps is recorded for each appearance of a slide.

  • Page 34 However, PSTN OmniTouch ACS servers have 8 or fewer T1/E1 interfaces (less than 240 ports maximum). – For VoIP OmniTouch ACSs, Alcatel-Lucent recommends 1Gb ports, to allow for future expansion. In an OmniTouch ACS stack, PSTN requires more backplane bandwidth Note: than VoIP because there is also audio being transmitted.
  • Page 35 Planning Your OmniTouch ACS Stack To prepare your network ..............................................................................................Configure PSTN hunt group. PSTN stacks should have their incoming PSTN lines configured (by your service provider) as a single hunt group. Application/desktop sharing and editing General information The primary consideration when planning for Alcatel-Lucent OmniTouch My Teamwork Application Sharing is the amount of network traffic. If you are using Presentation Sharing for large conferences, less bandwidth is needed than if you are using Application and Desktop Sharing and Editing with a small team of participants.

Stack Design and Operation Stacking capabilities .................................................... A single conference that spans multiple servers can share the same database. A stack does not need to be at the same physical location. Trunk routing rules can be defined to create outbound call routing. Zero (0) is not a valid Node ID for a server in a stack.

Alcatel-Lucent applications. They are responsible for all user-specific functions, such as provisioning, scheduling conferences, authentication, etc. All calls and sessions originate with a request generated by an Alcatel-Lucent application; even dial-in calls are authenticated and routed in accordance with an application’s direction. Application servers also provide some real-time coordination of call signaling.

Similarly, if a stacked Media Server goes down, connections on it drop and it is not used until it comes back up (OmniTouch ACS automatically restarts when it encounters failure). In addition to this increased redundancy in stacked mode, stacked media servers provide transparent scaling of OmniTouch ACS’s capacity.

Network Requirements Overview Purpose Adding conferencing and collaboration, particularly VoIP conferencing, to an existing LAN environment can impose new stresses on the LAN. Without presuming to offer a generalized guide to network engineering, this appendix offers some guidance on estimating the impact of adding an OmniTouch Advanced Communications server to an existing LAN.

.................................................... Bandwidth requirements on the primary LAN To preserve voice quality, Alcatel-Lucent recommends that any Ethernet interface carrying voice traffic be planned for no more than 30% utilization of the network’s nominal capacity (for example, 333 Mb/sec of a 1Gb/sec port). Therefore, a...

Network Requirements Stack backplane bandwidth .................................................... Presence This generates a fairly light load on a typical network. Presence overhead is dependent on two factors: the number of desktops with open presence applications, and the number of contacts (buddies) active on each desktop. On My Teamwork, presence updates are sent to a person’s contact list whenever that person’s status changes.

Network Requirements An example of maximum capacities with OmniTouch My Teamwork .................................................... The theoretical worst case would occur if every conference call has a slave leg to every other server in the stack. It would be difficult to get to this state. In such a worst-case scenario in a 3-server stack with 120 ports/server and 6 participants per conference, you would have 30 calls per server, each with 1 user spilled over to each of the other two ACSs.
