WARNING
To prevent fire or shock hazard, do not ex-
pose the unit to rain or moisture.
This equipment generates and uses radio
frequency energy and if not installed and
used properly, that is, in strict accordance
with the manufacturer's instructions, may
cause interference
to
radio and television
reception. It
has been
type
tested and found
to comply with
the
limits for a Class B com-
puting device
in
accordance with the specifi-
cations in
Subpart
J of Part 15 of FCC Rules,
which are
designed
to provide reasonable
protection against such
interference
in a
res idential installation
.
However,
there is no
guarantee that interference will not occur in
a particular
installation
.
If this equipment
does
cause
interference to radio or televi-
sion reception, which can be determined by
turning the equipment off and on, the user is
encouraged to try to correct the interference
by one or more of the following measures:
-reorient
the receiving antenna
-re
locate
this equipment with
respect
to
the receiver
-move this equipment away from
the
re-
ceiver
-plug this equipment into a different outlet
so that equipment and receiver are
on
dif-
ferent branch
circuits.
If necessary, the
user should consult
the
dealer or an experienced
radio/television
technician
for
additional
suggestions. The
user may find the following booklet

FEATURES
In
conventional
ana
log
recording systems,
the qual ity
of sound
reproduction depends
upon the
properties of
magnetic tape
and
heads, so
th
at
it
is virtually impossible to bypass the
inherent
limitations
of
conventiona
l
analog recording
,
including its
lim

dynamic
range and frequency
response,
and
its
associated
distor-

.
The
Pulse
Code
Modulation
(PCM)
system
points
the way to a
new
era
in
sound
reproduction
.
It
can offer performance
and fidelity
far
superior to any analog
system.
In the PCM
system, sound levels are converted
to
a
series
of binary
codes.
This
informat ion is recorded as
digital
pu lses of
equal
amplitude.
In
playback,
all that
has to be done is to
discrim
inate
between the presence and
absence of
a
pulse.
The quality
of
recording and playbac
k
is
thus
not
dependent
on the
charact
eris-
t ics of
tape
and
heads.
The PCM-F1 is the newest add ition
to Sony's line of
PCM
digital
audio processors
for

Compact, lightweight PCM digital audio processor
In
conventional d
igital
audio processors, several hundreds of
ICs
are employed in digital
processing
circuitry,
which
makes it dif-
ficult
to
make
the
unit compact
and
ligh tweight.
The
three new
LSi

digital
processing
developed especial
ly for
digital audio processor use have successfu
lly
made
the
PCM-F1
compact and lightweight. The A/D
(analog-to-digital) and
D/A
(digital
-to-analog) converters, wh ich
are newly developed
mono-
lithic ICs, are
especia
lly adaptable
to
mass production.
This

in the

a PCM digital audio processor that is more

a greater

Resolution selector
for
recording and

with wider dynamic

less distortion
The PCM-F1
was developed
in

the techn ica
l
spec-

of the Electron ic Industries
Assoc

(EIAJ),
wh ich has adopted the
14-bi

unit
has
the
capabi lity
of recording and playing back in ac-
cordance with
the 16-bit

wider
dynamic

format.
The
14-bit
