Chapter 3

Applications

This chapter presents an overview of the levels of service provided by incorporating the
technology of the NETGEAR Model SW510 and Model SW518 Ethernet switches into your
network. Examples are given to illustrate the role of the switch in several configurations that
provide those different levels of service to networks and users.
The Model SW510 and Model SW518 switches are designed to provide flexibility in configuring
your network connections. The switch can be used as a standalone device or can be connected with
standard repeaters, switching hubs, or other interconnection devices in various configurations. The
configuration examples in this chapter illustrate the integration of the switch in network
environments of all sizes and types. These examples include a network of a few workstations
connected to a printer and a segmented network with multiple users and other networking devices.

Desktop Switching

The Model SW510 and Model SW518 switches are designed to perform the functions of a desktop
switch where a small group of users need to be assured of having 10 Mbps network access. A
power user on the same network can have a 100 Mbps connection to the switch and a 200 Mbps
connection to the server.
Figure 3-1
illustrates PCs connected to the 10 Mbps Ethernet ports of a
Model SW510 Ethernet switch. The power user and the server are connected to the 10/100 Mbps
ports.
