Free space
Space on a volume that is not occupied by data such as files and folders.
Not to be confused with unallocated space (p. 93) on a disk.

GPT disk
A disk whose partitioning scheme (p. 90) is GUID partition table (GPT).
GPT disks are typically used by 64-bit operating systems, such as Windows XP Professional x64
Edition.

One of the two partitioning schemes of a disk. See in Partitioning scheme (p. 90).

Hard disk

A fixed storage media along with integrated electronics that consists of several magnetic platters that
rotate synchronously on one spindle.
Hard disks have a relatively high capacity and high read/write speed.
A hard disk is also called a hard disk drive.
Hidden volume
A volume (p. 93) that is made invisible to an operating system.
Hiding a volume is usually done by changing its partition type (p. 90).

Initialization
The process of registering a disk in the operating system.
Initialization involves assigning a partitioning scheme (p. 90) (MBR or GPT) and a type (basic or
dynamic) to the disk.
Initialization is usually performed when you add a new hard disk drive to the machine.
