Checking the rear brake lever
free play

1. Rear brake lever free play
Measure the rear brake lever free play
as shown. Periodically check the brake
lever free play and, if the free play is 20
mm (0.79 in) or more, have a Yamaha
dealer check and adjust the brake sys-
tem.
WARNING
An incorrect brake lever free play in-
dicates a hazardous condition in the
brake system. Do not operate the
vehicle until the brake system has
been checked or repaired by a
Yamaha dealer.

Checking and adjusting the
parking brake cable
The parking brake must be checked
and adjusted at the intervals specified
in the periodic maintenance and ad-
justment chart, or sooner if the parking
brake does not properly hold the
wheel.
Periodically check that the parking
brake holds the wheel as follows.
1. Stop the vehicle on a level surface,
and then stop the engine.
2. Apply the parking brake. (See
page 4-11.)
3. Try to push the vehicle forward
and then backwards to confirm
that the parking brake functions
properly.
4. If the parking brake does not

properly hold the wheel, adjust the
parking brake cable.
Adjusting the parking brake cable
With the parking brake released, mea-
sure the parking brake cable length as
shown.
