P mode can also be selected by pressing the
program-reset button; since doing so also
resets other camera functions to their stand¬
ard positions, however, the procedure de¬
scribed on p.30 should be used if you wish to
keep previously selected alternate settings of
other camera functions.

P: PROGRAM MODE
In P mode the camera automatically sets the ap¬
erture and shutter speed, based on light read¬
ings from the metering system, and on the type
of the lens in use (focal length and minimum ap¬
erture). The program lines followed for lenses
of various focal lengths are shown at right Each
program is designed to select a shutter speed
that is fast enough to minimize blur caused by
camera shake.
Operating the camera in P mode leaves you free
to concentrate on composition and other picture
elements. When the shutter-release button is
pressed partway down, the camera measures
the ambient light, automatically determines cor¬
rect exposure, and displays its program setting
in the data panel. Shutter speed and aperture
settings are made steplessly, and displayed to
the nearest half-stop setting.
