Deactivating the convertible locking
retractor
The convertible locking retractor for child re-
straints will be deactivated automatically
when the belt is wound all the way back into
the retractor.

Press the red button on t he safety be lt
buck le . The belt tongue will pop out of the
buck le.

Guide the safety belt all the way back into
its stowed posit ion.
Always let the safety belt retract comp lete ly
into its stowed posit ion. The safety belt can
now be used as an ordinary safety belt with-
out the convert ible locking retractor for ch ild
restra ints .
If the convertible locking retractor shou ld be
activated inadvertently, the safety belt must
be unfastened and guided completely back in-
to its stowed position to deactivate th is fea-
ture .
If
the convertib le locking retractor is not
dea ctivated, the safety belt will g radua lly be-
come t ighter a nd uncomfo rt ab le to wear .

Child Restraint System anchors and how
are they related to child safety
To provid e a simp ler and more practicable way
to attach the child restra int on the vehicle
seat, Federal regulat ions req uire spec ial lower
anchorages in vehicles and devices on new
child restra ints to attach to the veh icle ancho -
rages .
The combinat ion of the tether anchorages and
the lower anchorages is now generally called
the LATCH system for "Lower Anchorages and
Tethers for Child ren."
Forward-facing chi ld restraints manufactured
after September 1, 1999, are requ ired by U.S.
federa l regu lations to comply with new child
head movement performa nce requir ements .
These new pe rfo rmance requ irements ma ke a
tethe r ne cessary on most new child sea t s.
Installing a ch ild restra int that requires a top
tethe r without one can seriously impa ir the
perfo rman ce of the child restra int and its abil-
ity t o protect the child in a coll isio n. Insta lling
a ch ild res t ra int t hat requir es a top tethe r
withou t the to p t et her may be a violat ion of
state law.
