Installing the Foam and Paper Elements
Important
To prevent engine damage, always operate
the engine with the complete foam and paper air cleaner
assembly installed.
1. Place the foam element and paper element inot the
blower housing.
Note: Ensure that the rubber seal is flat against the air
cleaner base.
2. Align the tabs on the air cleaner cover with the slots of
the blower housing (Fig. 34). Hook the handle onto the
cover and press down on the handle to lock the cover in
place.

Servicing the Blades

To ensure a superior quality of cut, keep the blades sharp.
For convenient sharpening and replacement, keep extra
blades.
Danger
Worn or damaged blades can break and a piece of
a blade could be thrown into the operator's or
bystander's area, resulting in serious personal
injury or death.
Inspect the blades periodically for wear or
damage.
Replace worn or damaged blades.
Inspecting the Blades
1. Remove the mower; refer to Removing the Mower on
page 35.
2. Inspect the cutting edges (Fig. 35). If the edges are not
sharp or have nicks, remove the blades and sharpen
them; refer to Sharpening the Blades on page 35.

3. Inspect the blades, especially the bent edges (Fig. 35). If
you notice any wear or damage in this area,
immediately install new blades.
4. If the shear pins are broken, replace them immediately
(Fig. 35).
Important
If the shear pins are broken, the mower belt
may be damaged. Inspect the belt; refer to Adjusting the
Blade Drive Belt on page 36.
Removing the Blades
1. Remove the mower; refer to Removing the Mower on
page 35.
2. Carefully tip the mower over.
3. Remove the bolts, washers, and blades (Fig. 35). Wedge
a block of wood between each blade and the mower to
lock the blade when you are removing each bolt.
Note: The right blade has a left-hand threaded bolt.
4. Inspect all parts; replace any that are worn or damaged.
