    Your phone Icons Icon Description Shows the received signal strength. The more bars, the stronger the signal. Appears when a call is in progress. Appears when you are out of a service area.     Your phone Backlight The display and the keypad are illuminated by a backlight. When you press any key, the backlight illuminates. It turns off if you don’t press any key within a given period of time, depending on the Backlight menu option. For further details, see page 166.

    Getting started Inserting/Removing the SIM card When you subscribe to a cellular network, you are provided with a SIM card loaded with your subscription details, such as your PIN, any optional services available and so on. • Keep all miniature SIM cards out of the reach of small children.

    Your phone is powered by a rechargeable Li-ion battery. Use only approved batteries and chargers. Ask your local Samsung dealer for further details. Note: You must fully charge the battery before using your phone for the first time. A discharged standard battery is fully recharged in approximately 130 minutes.

    Getting started Locking or unlocking the keypad You can lock the soft keys, navigation keys, WAP brower key, volume keys and camera key to avoid pressing keys by accident. To lock the keys, slide the folder down. If you select the Stop operation from the Down option in the Slide settings menu (see page 171), the phone locks the keys automatically when you slide the folder down.

Viewing missed calls If you have a subscription that includes the Caller Line Identification (CLI) feature and you are unable to answer a call for any reason, you can find out who was calling you so that you can call the person back.

    Call functions Ending a call When you want to finish your call, briefly press the key. Note: If you select the Continue operation from the Down option in the Slide settings menu, you cannot finish your call by sliding the folder down. Answering a call When somebody calls you, the phone rings and displays the incoming call image.

    Adjusting the volume During a call, if you wish to adjust the earpiece volume, use the volume keys on the left side of the phone. When you hear a sound, such as ringtone, you can also adjust the earpiece volume. The adjusted volume level will be temporary.

    Entering text The phone allows you to enter characters for messages and names in Chinese and English. To enter Chinese text, the phone provides several widely used pronunciation based (Pinyin) and character shape based (Stroke) input methods to meet the preferences of different users, allowing for greater convenience and ease of use.

    Entering text Using Pinyin mode Pinyin is a system to mark Chinese pronunciation in Latin alphabets. With the pinyin input method, you can enter Chinese characters by entering the pinyin string from the phone keypad and the phone automatically presents the matching alternatives. This mode allows you to enter Pinyin characters with only one key press per letter.

    Phonebook menu The Phonebook offers the following features: • Phonebook: allows you to find, create, or set up the speed-dialling feature and manage Phonebook entries. • Management: allows you to create or remove your own number, set up caller groups and check the memory status.
