Appendix B
Troubleshooting

The NIC cannot connect to the network

Be sure the cable is installed properly
When using twisted-pair cable, the network cable must be securely attached at
both RJ-45 connections (NIC and hub/switch). The maximum allowable
distance from NIC to hub is 100 meters. If the cable is attached and the
distance is within acceptable limits but the problem persists, try a different
cable.
If you are directly connecting two computers (no hub/switch) with twisted-pair
cable, use a crossover cable. Most hubs require a straight-through cable, while
most switches require a crossover cable (see your hub or switch documentation
to verify).
When using fiber cable, the network cable must be securely attached at both SC
connectors (NIC and hub/switch). See Table B-1 for the maximum distances
for fiber cable. If the cable is attached and within distance limits, ensure the
TX-RX plugs are inserted in the proper connectors (TX from NIC attaches to
RX in other device, RX from NIC attaches to TX in other device). If the cable
installation is correct and you are still cannot connect to the network, try a
different cable.
