MIDLAND G5 is a new generation PMR 446 transceiver that may be used, without license, in all the countries in which Pan-European PMR446 frequencies are authorised (446.00625 – 446.09375 MHz).
Please consult the "Restrictions on the use" chart for information regarding country specific limitations.

Battery compartment

To open the battery compartment, hold the unit face down and slide the cover towards the bottom of the radio; then, insert 3 x AAA alkaline or rechargeable batteries.

Display illumination

Press once the button [3] to activate display illumination for approx. 7seconds. The display illumination can be also activated by pushing L [6] button and deactivated by pressing L again.

** Coverage
The maximum range is obtained during use in an open space.
The only limitation to maximum possible range are environmental factors such as blockage caused by trees, buildings, or other obstructions. Inside a car or a metallic constructions, the range can be reduced.

LET'S COMMUNICATE!

To turn radio on/off

Hold the [3] button down for 3 seconds. The radio beeps 3 times with different tones (may be inhibited). The LCD [1] displays a "self-test" message for 1 second, it will then indicate the last channel selected.

Volume adjustment

To adjust the volume level, push ▼/▲ [2] buttons until you reach the desired level.

Channel selection

Press the [3] button once and then the ▼/▲ [2] controls to select one of the 8 channels. To confirm the selection, push PTT [7] or wait for 5 seconds roughly.

Transmission


For maximum speech clarity, hold the radio 4 to 10 cm away from your mouth, keep the PTT button [7] pressed and speak into the unit. During transmission the display shows:
When the PTT is released, the radio beeps to confirm to other users that your transmission has finished (This function is disabled by default, to enable it see paragraph "Roger Beep").

Reception


Simply release the PTT [7] button. When you receive a signal, display shows:

Background noise reduction (Squelch)

In your MIDLAND G5 the background noise reduction device (squelch) is activated by default.

Automatic power save

MIDLAND G5 is supplied with an automatic current economy circuit. If the transceiver receives no signal for 7 seconds or longer the "power save function" automatically activates [1]. The battery life may increase by up to 50%.
When the batteries are in need of charging, icon will be displayed: it is necessary to replace the alkaline batteries or recharge the Ni-Cd/NiMH ones.

Jack CHG [8]

External charger jack. Insert the original charger plug into the CHG jack [8]. We recommend use of the appropriate charger only. Attention: alkaline batteries cannot be recharged.

Keypad lock


Press and hold the SCAN [4] button for longer than 3 seconds: the display will show Lc to confirm activation. PTT [7] and L [6] buttons will still be active. Repeat the same procedure to unlock the keypad.

KEY FUNCTIONS

VOX: hands-free transmission

VOX function activation


Press the [3] key for three times. The display shows "VOX" blinking at the top on the left, while on the right of the channel number, "of" appears. Select "on" by means of ▼/▲ [2] buttons and push the PTT [7] key, or simply await 5 seconds for confirmation.
Speak into the microphone [5]: the transmission is automatically activated.

VOX deactivation


Press the [3] key again. The display shows "VOX" blinking at the top on the left, while on the right of the channel number, "on" appears. Select "of" using the ▼/▲ [2] buttons and push the PTT [7] key, or simply await 5 seconds for confirmation.

ROGER BEEP: end transmission tone


When PTT [7] is released the radio will beep to confirm to other users that your transmission has finished. This feature is disabled by default.
To enable it, follow these steps:

  1. Press the [3] button 4 times until the LCD shows
  2. Select "On" by using the ▼/▲ buttons [2].
  3. Press PTT [7] key or [3] button for confirmation.
  4. Roger Beep is now activated.

SCAN FUNCTION

The SCAN mode monitors the busy channels.
It is used to check the traffic radio on the 8 channels before transmitting and allows the unit to stop on a channel that someone is talking on. When the radio stops on a busy channel, the scan will resume after about 5 seconds.
To enable SCAN:

  1. Press SCAN [4] key: channels will start scanning on the display [3].
  2. Press ▼ or ▲ [2] buttons to skip the channels with a strong background noise.

Transmission during the SCAN function
At the PTT [7] pressure, the radio will transmit on the channel where the scan started. To deactivate this function, push the SCAN [4] key again.

CTCSS-sub-tone setting

MIDLAND G5 can receive in two modalities:

  1. open traffic: in this case you will hear any communication transmitted on the selected channel.
  2. group mode CTCSS: CTCSS tones are access keys that allows you to receive only messages coming from parties using the same channel and code. Speaker will remain muted until the correct CTCSS tone is received.

To activate 38 different CTCSS tones in RX and TX follow these steps:

  1. Turn on the radio.
  2. Select with the ▼/▲ [2] buttons one of the 8 channels.
  3. Press twice the [3] button until the display shows the selected channel with the flashing CTCSS code segment on the right.
  4. Select with the ▼/▲ [2] buttons the desired CTCSS-Code.
  5. To confirm the setting, press the PTT [7] key or await 5 seconds approx.

To deactivate CTCSS tones
If you want no CTCSS code:

  1. Press twice the [3] key until the display shows the desired channel and the CTCSS tone blinking on the right.
  2. Select "of" with ▼/▲ [2] buttons.
