  1. Open the battery compartment cover on the rear of the tuner in the direction of the arrow.
  2. Insert the battery, making sure to observe the correct polarity, and then close the cover.

Tuning

Tuning procedure

  1. Turn the left shuttle switch upward. Each time you turn the shuttle switch, the TD-38L/TD-38S will be turned on or off.
If the power is left on for approximately 20 minutes without any user input, it will turn off automatically (Auto power-off function).
  2. If necessary, change the reference pitch (calibration). (*M)
Each time you turn the right shuttle switch upward (or downward), the reference pitch (calibration) increases (or decreases). The setting can be changed within the range of 410 Hz to 480 Hz in 1 Hz steps. Hold the shuttle switch turned to increase or decrease the setting continuously.
  3. Play a single note on your instrument. The note name closest to the detected pitch appears in the note name indicator.
Tune your instrument to the correct pitch so that the desired note name appears.
  4. Once again, play a single note on your instrument and adjust the tuning so that the center segment of the meter (indicated by ) is lit up.
and indicators on the left side of the meter will light up if the pitch is flat, and and indicators on the right side will light up if the pitch is sharp.

When pure temperament tuning to a major third or minor third above a certain note, adjust the pitch to the pure major third mark or pure minor third mark on the meter. For example if you want to tune to a pure major third above A, make the note name indicator read C#, and tune so that the meter indicates the left . Alternatively, if you want to tune to a pure minor third above A, make the note name indicator read C, and tune so that the meter indicates the right .

warning Even if the pitch is within the range of detection, it may not be possible to detect the pitch of an instrumental sound that contains large numbers of overtones or a sound that has a rapid decay.

warning The meter may respond to vibrations it picks up from the environment.

Backlight (*M)

Turn the left shuttle switch downward. Each time you move the shuttle switch, the backlight brightness changes as follows.

... Off → Soft → Auto → Off → Soft...

When the backlight is lit, the backlight indicator appears.

Off: The backlight will go dark.

Soft: The backlight will light at a lower level of brightness.

Auto: The backlight will light brightly when sound is inputted or when a shuttle switch is operated. When there has been no sound input or shuttle switch operation for approximately ten seconds after the power has been turned on, the backlight will light at a lower level of brightness in order to prevent the battery from being depleted.
