M.2 SSD, PCIe SSD, and NVMe SSD Installation
steps
M.2 devices can be connected via an M.2 card slot or through PCIe by using an M.2 to
PCIe adapter. Some SSDs are designed to be installed in a PCIe slot to provide higher
bandwidth than a SATA interface, such as the Intel
high-performance standard for M.2/PCIe SSDs.
Each M.2 and PCIe device requires a certain amount of bandwidth – in the form of
lanes – to transfer data. These lanes can be provided by the CPU or the motherboard
PCH. As a result, these devices sometimes share resources with other components on
the motherboard, which may limit some hardware combinations. PLEASE SEE
CHART ON PAGE 26 FOR A BREAKDOWN OF SHARED RESOURCES.
M.2 Physical Installation
1. Please see Page 33 for instructions how to physically install an M.2 device.
PCIe SSD Physical Installation
1. Install the SSD into any available PCIe slot with at least x4 Lanes available
(Gen5 and Gen4 are preferred for better speed).
a. The Z790 DARK K|NGP|N will support PCIe SSDs in all PCIe slots.
2. Attach the SSD's mounting bracket to the back of the case.
3. Review the installation manual for your SSD to see whether the SSD requires an
external power connector. If no, then the SSD will be powered by the board.
BIOS Setup / Windows Installation for M.2/PCIe NVMe SSDs
 Installation steps for a fresh install of Windows.
1. Power on the PC and enter the BIOS by tapping the Delete key repeatedly.
2. Once in BIOS, navigate to the "BOOT" section.
3. For Windows 11/10 installations, it's recommended to leave the Boot mode
select on UEFI.
a. IF you have legacy hardware that cannot work in an UEFI
environment, you have two options – Change the Boot mode to
Legacy, or enable CSM and configure CSM settings for your device.
ii. Before setting the Boot mode to Legacy, we recommend

recommended to consider updating your legacy hardware,
rather than use the Legacy boot mode.
trying to enable CSM and confirm whether your legacy device
works with CSM enabled.
