Before using this product, please carefully read both these instructions and the camera manual. The illustrations in these instructions show an AF-P DX NIKKOR 18–55 mm f/3.5–5.6G VR lens.
Note:
DX lenses are for use with Nikon DX-format digital single-lens refl ex cameras. The angle of view of a lens on a DX-format camera is equivalent to that of a lens with a focal length about 1.5 × longer mounted on a 35 mm format camera.
This lens does not support D4-series, D3-series, D2-series, D1-series, D800series, D700, D610, D600, D300-series, D200, D100, D90, D80, D70-series, D60, D50, D40-series, D7000, D5100, D5000, D3200, D3100 or D3000 digital SLR cameras or fi lm SLR cameras. When using it with a D5500, D5300, or D3300, be sure the camera fi rmware has been updated to the latest version. If the camera is off or the standby timer has expired, the focus ring can not be used to focus the camera and rotating the zoom ring will cause the subject to go out of focus. Before focusing, turn the camera on or restart the standby timer by pressing the shutter-release button halfway.

Attaching and Removing the Lens

Attaching the Lens

  1. Turn the camera off and remove the camera body cap.
  2. Remove the rear lens cap.
  3. Attach the lens.
Keeping the lens mounting mark aligned with the mounting mark on the camera body, position the lens in the camera's bayonet mount and then rotate the lens counter-clockwise until it clicks into place with the lens mounting mark at the top. Be careful not to press the retractable lens barrel button while attaching or removing the lens.

Removing the Lens

  1. Turn the camera off.
  2. Remove the lens.
To remove the lens, press the camera lens release button while turning the lens clockwise.

Before Use

The lens features a retractable barrel. Before using the camera, unlock and extend the zoom ring. Keeping the retractable lens barrel button pressed (), rotate the zoom ring as shown ().
Before Use

  • Photographs can be taken only when the focal length scale is between 18 and 55 mm (Figure 2).
  • To retract the lens, keep the retractable lens barrel button pressed and rotate the zoom ring in the opposite direction until it locks.
  • If the camera is turned on with the lens retracted, the camera will display a message, "", "", or other warning. Extend the lens before shooting.

Focus

Focus mode is determined by the camera focus mode. See the camera manual for information on camera focus mode selection. Users of D810series, Df, D750, D7200, D7100, or D5200 cameras should note that if the standby timer is allowed to expire, the focus position will change when the timer is restarted. Refocus before shooting. Longer standby times are recommended for manual focus and in other situations in which you may not release the shutter immediately after focusing.

Autofocus

Focus is adjusted automatically when the camera is in autofocus mode. The focus ring can also be used to focus the camera if the shutter-release button is kept pressed halfway (or if the AF-ON button is kept pressed); this is known as "autofocus with manual override" (M/A). Autofocus will resume when the shutter-release button is pressed halfway (or the AF-ON button is pressed) a second time. Note that touching the focus ring while autofocus is in eff ect will change the focus position.

Manual Focus

When the camera is in manual focus mode, focus can be adjusted by rotating the lens focus ring.

A Note on Wide- and Super Wide-Angle Lenses

Autofocus may not provide the desired results in situations like those shown below. In these cases, use manual focus, or use focus lock to focus on another subject at the same distance and then recompose the photograph.
A Note on Wide- and Super Wide-Angle Lenses Step 1

Objects in the background occupy more of the focus point than the main subject: If the focus point contains both foreground and background objects, the camera may focus on the background and the subject may be out of focus.

A Note on Wide- and Super Wide-Angle Lenses Step 2
The subject contains many fine details: The camera may have diffi culty focusing on subjects that lack contrast or appear smaller than objects in the background.

For more information, see "Getting Good Results with Autofocus" in the camera manual.

Zoom

Before focusing, rotate the zoom ring to adjust the focal length and frame the photograph.

Depth of Field

If the camera off ers depth-of-field preview, depth of field can be previewed in the viewfinder.

Aperture

Aperture is adjusted using camera controls.

Zoom and Maximum Aperture

Changes to zoom can alter the maximum aperture by up to 11/3 EV.

Built-in Flash Units

When using the built-in flash on cameras equipped with a built-in flash unit, remove the lens hood to prevent vignetting (shadows created where the end of the lens obscures the built-in flash).

Using Built-in Flash Units Without Vignetting

Vignetting may occur with the built-in flash units for the following cameras when the lens is attached. The minimum focus distances at which the flash can be used without vignetting are given below.

Camera Focal length Use at ranges of*
D5500/D5300/D5200/ D3300 18 mm 1.0 m/3 ft 3.4 in. or more
24, 35, 45, and 55 mm No restrictions

* Lens hood not attached.
For the latest information on vignetting with this lens, see the camera manual.

Vibration Reduction (VR, AF-P DX NIKKOR 18–55 mm f/3.5–5.6G VR Only)

Vibration reduction (VR) is available when an AF-P DX NIKKOR 18–55m m f/3.5–5.6G VR lens is mounted on the camera and the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. Vibration reduction can be turned on and off using the Optical VR option in the camera menus; when on, it reduces blur caused by camera shake, allowing shutter speeds up to 4.0 stops slower than would otherwise be the case, increasing the range of shutter speeds available. The eff ects of VR on shutter speed are measured according to Camera and Imaging Products Association (CIPA) standards; FX-format lenses are measured using FX-format digital cameras, DX-format lenses using DX-format cameras. Zoom lenses are measured at maximum zoom.

Using Vibration Reduction: Notes

  • When using vibration reduction, press the shutter-release button halfway and wait for the image in the viewfi nder to stabilize before pressing the shutter-release button the rest of the way down.
  • When vibration reduction is active, the image in the viewfi nder may be blurred after the shutter is released. This does not indicate a malfunction.
  • When the camera is panned, vibration reduction applies only to motion that is not part of the pan (if the camera is panned horizontally, for example, vibration reduction will be applied only to vertical shake), making it much easier to pan the camera smoothly in a wide arc.
  • If the camera is equipped with a built-in flash, vibration reduction will be disabled while the flash charges.
  • Vibration reduction is generally recommended when the camera is mounted on a tripod, although you may prefer to turn it off depending on shooting conditions and the type of tripod.

The Optional Lens Hood

The lens hoods protect the lens and block stray light that would otherwise cause fl are or ghosting.

Attaching the Hood

Align the lens hood mounting mark ( ) with the lens hood alignment mark ( ) and then rotate the hood ( ) until the mark is aligned with the lens hood lock mark ( ).
Attaching the Hood Step 1

When attaching or removing the hood, hold it near the symbol on its base and avoid gripping it too tightly. Vignetting may occur if the hood is not correctly attached. The hood can be reversed and mounted on the lens when not in use.
Attaching the Hood Step 2

Removing the Hood

Hold the hood near the lens hood alignment mark () and rotate as shown.
Removing the Hood

Lens Care

  • Do not pick up or hold the lens or camera using only the lens hood.
  • Keep the CPU contacts clean.
  • Use a blower to remove dust and lint from the lens surfaces. To remove smudges and fi ngerprints, apply a small amount of ethanol or lens cleaner to a soft, clean cotton cloth or lens-cleaning tissue and clean from the center outwards using a circular motion, taking care not to leave smears or touch the glass with your fingers.
  • Never use organic solvents such as paint thinner or benzene to clean the lens.
  • The lens hood or NC fi lters can be used to protect the front lens element.
  • Attach the front and rear caps before placing the lens in its lens case.
  • If the lens will not be used for an extended period, store it in a cool, dry location to prevent mold and rust. Do not store in direct sunlight or with naphtha or camphor moth balls.
  • Keep the lens dry. Rusting of the internal mechanism can cause irrepa-rable damage.
  • Leaving the lens in extremely hot locations could damage or warp parts made from reinforced plastic.
