USING YOUR
BOILER
2.1

LIGHTING YOUR BOILER

The lighting procedure is:
1.
Ensure that:
a)
There is sufficient fuel, of the correct type, in the
supply tank and that all fuel supply valves are open.
b)
The water supply is on.
c)
The electricity supply to the boiler is OFF.
d)
The boiler On/Off switch is set to OFF.
e)
The Heating switch is set to TIMED or CONSTANT.
f)
The Hot Water switch is set to TIMED or CONSTANT.
g)
The cold system pressure is in the recommended
range (see Section 3.1).
h)
The room thermostat (if fitted) is at the desired setting.
i)
The boiler thermostat is set to the required setting.
j)
The timer or programmer is correctly set.
2.
Switch the electricity supply to the boiler ON.
3.
Set the boiler On/Off switch to ON.
4.
The boiler will now light automatically.
5.
If the programmer or timer is set to a heating 'on' period
and the room thermostat is 'calling' for heat, the boiler will
continue to run to provide central heating, after the hot water
store reaches temperature.
Once the store has reached temperature, if a hot water tap is
opened the boiler will provide hot water.
2.2

IF YOUR BOILER FAILS TO LIGHT

Make the following checks:
1.
Check that the boiler On/Off switch is set to ON and that the
POWER indicator LED on the control panel is lit.
2.
Check that the timer or programmer is working and is set to
ON.
3.
Check that all thermostats are set to the desired setting and
are calling for heat.
4.
Check that the DEMAND LED on the control panel is lit.
5.
Check if the burner 'Lock-Out' reset button on the burner
body (refer to Figure 1-1 for location) is lit.
If it is, press it to start the burner.
If the burner fails to light and goes to 'Lock-Out' again, check
that you have sufficient fuel in the storage tank and that the
fuel supply valve is open.
6.
Check that the fire valve in the oil supply line has not tripped.
7.
Check to see if the OVERHEAT LED on the control panel
is flashing - indicating that the overheat thermostat has
operated. (See Section 2.7).
8.
Ensure that a fuse has not blown or that the electricity supply
has not failed.
If the burner still fails to light after carrying out these checks then
a fault exists or the fuel supply is low. If you have sufficient fuel,
switch off the electricity supply to the boiler and contact your
service engineer.
2.3

TURNING OFF YOUR BOILER

To turn off your boiler:
For short periods-
Set the On/Off switch to OFF.
To restart, simply set the switch to On.
For long periods-
Set the On/Off switch to OFF and switch off the electricity
supply to the boiler. If required, the fuel supply valve may be
closed and the water and electricity supplies turned off at the
mains.
To restart, refer to Section 2.1 (Lighting your Boiler).
Section 2: Using your Boiler
2.4

DOMESTIC HOT WATER SYSTEM

The boiler will supply domestic hot water whenever a hot tap
is opened, provided the boiler On/Off switch is set to ON and
the Hot Water switch is set to either CONSTANT or TIMED. If a
two-channel programmer is fitted, the hot water setting on the
programmer must be 'on' for the boiler to provide continuous hot
water when the Hot Water switch is set to TIMED.
2.5

'NIGHT TIME' HOT WATER FUNCTION

This is a feature built in to your boiler allowing a limited amount of
hot water to be drawn off during periods when either the hot water
programmer channel is 'off' (for example, during the night) or the
Hot Water switch is set to OFF - provided that the primary store in
the boiler is hot.
When a hot tap is opened in this period, the flow switch activates
the hot water store pump and the incoming mains cold water is
heated using whatever heat is present in the primary store.
The burner will not fire and so the heat in the store will gradually
be used up and the domestic hot water temperature will reduce
with time.
If a two-channel programmer is fitted the hot water setting on the
programmer must be 'on' for the boiler to provide continuous hot
water when the Hot Water switch is set to TIMED.
! NOTE !
The flow of water from the taps (hot or cold) depends on
the mains water pressure, and in some homes it may not
be possible to use more than one tap at a time.
2.6

ABOUT YOUR FUEL

Grant Vortex Combi boilers only operate on Class C2 Kerosene to
BS 2869:1998.
You should always quote this type of fuel when ordering from your
supplier.
Do not wait until the fuel runs out before you order some more
as sludge in the bottom of the tank may be drawn into the fuel
lines. If it is possible, switch off the boiler when the new supply is
delivered and leave the fuel to settle for an hour before restarting
the boiler.
2.7

BOILER CONTROLS

BOILER THERMOSTAT
This dial, located on the boiler control panel, allows the
temperature of the water leaving the boiler to heat the radiators
(and/or other heat emmiters if fitted) to be adjusted. This dial does
not control the temperature of the hot water flowing to the taps.
Refer to Figure 1-1 for the location of the control panel within the
boiler casing and Figure 2-1 for the details of the control panel.
OVERHEAT THERMOSTAT
Your boiler is fitted with a safety overheat thermostat which
will automatically switch off the boiler in the case of a control
malfunction causing overheating.
If your boiler goes off and you try to light it but nothing happens
and the 'Lock-Out' reset button on the burner is not lit, the
overheat thermostat has probably operated. The OVERHEAT
indicator LED on the control panel will also be flashing if the
overheat thermostat has tripped (see Figure 2-1).
The boiler will not light until the overheat thermostat is reset.
To reset the overheat thermostat, unscrew the small plastic cap
marked "reset" (see Figure 2-1), press the button and replace the
cap.
If this condition continually repeats, contact your service engineer.
