    Front Seats Manual Seats CAUTION: You can lose control of the vehicle if you try to adjust a manual driver’s seat while the vehicle is moving. The sudden movement could startle and confuse you, or make you push a pedal when you do not want to.

    Power Seat If your vehicle has this feature, there will be controls located on the inboard side of the driver’s seat. To raise or lower the front of the seat cushion, raise or lower the lever located toward the front of the vehicle. To raise or lower the rear of the seat cushion, raise or lower the lever located toward the rear of the vehicle.

    Reclining Seatbacks There is a lever located on the inboard side of the seat to adjust the seatback. 1. Lift the lever and lean back until the seatback is at the desired position. 2. Release the lever to lock the seatback where you want it.

    CAUTION: Sitting in a reclined position when your vehicle is in motion can be dangerous. Even if you buckle up, your safety belts can not do their job when you are reclined like this. The shoulder belt can not do its job because it will not be against your body.

    Rear Seats Bench Seat Each bench seat can carry up to three passengers. They can also be removed to increase storage space. See “Removing the Rear Seats” following.   • Page 13 Entering the Third Row Seat The second row seat has a seatback lever that makes it easier to enter the third row seat, if equipped. The lever is located on the right rear of the second row seat. 1. Pull up on the seatback release lever while pulling the seatback toward the rear of the vehicle.
  • Page 14 Removing the Rear Seats To remove the rear bench seats, do the following: 1. If you are removing the center seat, remove the right lap-shoulder belt. To do this, press the tip of a key into the release hole of the safety belt attachment while pulling up on the safety belt.
  • Page 15 5. Lift up on the left and the right seat release levers at the same time. The latches are near the floor on the rear legs of the seat. 6. Lift up on the rear of the seat to remove the seat assembly from the rear latch pins.
  • Page 16 Reinstalling the Rear Seats 1. Lower the seat into position. Make sure the front retainers are hooked onto the anchor pins. 1-10 2. Pull the seat down to latch the rear retainers. Make sure the seat is locked in by pulling up and down on the seat.

    Bucket Seats Your vehicle may have rear bucket seats with an adjustment release bar located under the front of the seats. These seats can be adjusted forward or rearward with the release bar. Pull the release bar up to release the seat bottom.
  • Page 19 CAUTION: It is extremely dangerous to ride in a cargo area, inside or outside of a vehicle. In a collision, people riding in these areas are more likely to be seriously injured or killed. Do not allow people to ride in any area of your vehicle that is not equipped with seats and safety belts.

  • Page 23 Questions and Answers About Safety Belts Will I be trapped in the vehicle after an accident if I am wearing a safety belt? You could be — whether you are wearing a safety belt or not. But you can unbuckle a safety belt, even if you are upside down.

    How to Wear Safety Belts Properly This part is only for people of adult size. Be aware that there are special things to know about safety belts and children. And there are different rules for smaller children and babies. If a child will be riding in your vehicle, see Older Children on page 1-33 or Infants and Young Children on page 1-35.
  • Page 25 The lap part of the belt should be worn low and snug on the hips, just touching the thighs. In a crash, this applies force to the strong pelvic bones. And you would be less likely to slide under the lap belt. If you slid under it, the belt would apply force at your abdomen.
  • Page 26 What is wrong with this? The shoulder belt is too loose. It will not give nearly as much protection this way. 1-20 CAUTION: You can be seriously hurt if your shoulder belt is too loose. In a crash, you would move forward too much, which could increase injury.
  • Page 27 What is wrong with this? The belt is buckled in the wrong place. CAUTION: You can be seriously injured if your belt is buckled in the wrong place like this. In a crash, the belt would go up over your abdomen. The belt forces would be there, not at the pelvic bones.

CAUTION: You can be seriously injured if you wear the shoulder belt under your arm. In a crash, your body would move too far forward, which would increase the chance of head and neck injury.

In a crash, you would not have the full width of the belt to spread impact forces. If a belt is twisted, make it straight so it can work properly, or ask your dealer to fix it.

    To unlatch the belt, just push the button on the buckle. The belt should go back out of the way. Before you close the door, be sure the belt is out of the way. If you slam the door on it, you can damage both the belt and your vehicle.

    Safety Belt Use During Pregnancy Safety belts work for everyone, including pregnant women. Like all occupants, they are more likely to be seriously injured if they do not wear safety belts. A pregnant woman should wear a lap-shoulder belt, and the lap portion should be worn as low as possible, below the rounding, throughout the pregnancy.
  • Page 33 1. Pick up the latch plate and pull the belt across you. Do not let it get twisted. The shoulder belt may lock if you pull the belt across you very quickly. If this happens, let the belt go back slightly to unlock it. Then pull the belt across you more slowly.

    Center Rear Passenger Position Lap Belt If your vehicle has rear bench seats, someone can sit in the center positions. When you sit in a center seating position, you have a lap safety belt, which has no retractor. To make the belt longer, tilt the latch plate and pull it along the belt.

    Rear Safety Belt Comfort Guides for Children and Small Adults Rear safety belt comfort guides provide added safety belt comfort for older children who have outgrown booster seats and for small adults. When installed on a shoulder belt, the comfort guide better positions the belt away from the neck and head.

Then, place the guide over the belt, and insert the two edges of the belt into the slots of the guide. 3. Be sure that the belt is not twisted and it lies flat. The elastic cord must be under the belt and the guide on top.

    CAUTION: Never do this. Here a child is sitting in a seat that has a lap-shoulder belt, but the shoulder part is behind the child. If the child wears the belt in this way, in a crash the child might slide under the belt.
  • Page 42 CAUTION: People should never hold a baby in their arms while riding in a vehicle. A baby does not weigh much — until a crash. During a crash a baby will become so heavy it is not possible to hold it. For example, in a crash at only 25 mph (40 km/h), a 12 lb (5.5 kg) baby will suddenly become a 240 lb (110 kg) force on a person’s arms.

Airbags plus lap-shoulder belts offer protection for adults and older children, but not for young children and infants. Neither the vehicle’s safety belt system nor its airbag system is designed for them.
  • Page 44 What are the different types of add-on child restraints? Add-on child restraints, which are purchased by the vehicle’s owner, are available in four basic types. Selection of a particular restraint should take into consideration not only the child’s weight, height and age but also whether or not the restraint will be compatible with the motor vehicle in which it will be used.
  • Page 45 CAUTION: The body structure of a young child is quite unlike that of an adult or older child, for whom the safety belts are designed. A young child’s hip bones are still so small that the vehicle’s regular safety belt may not remain low on the hip bones, as it should.
  • Page 46 CAUTION: Newborn infants need complete support, including support for the head and neck. This is necessary because a newborn infant’s neck is weak and its head weighs so much compared with the rest of its body. In a crash, an infant in a rear-facing seat settles into the restraint, so the crash forces can be distributed across the strongest part of an infant’s body, the back and shoulders.

The harness system holds the infant in place and, in a crash, acts to keep the infant positioned in the restraint. 1-42 A forward-facing child seat (C-E) provides restraint for the child’s body with the harness and also sometimes with surfaces such as T-shaped or shelf-like shields.
  • Page 49 A booster seat (F-G) is a child restraint designed to improve the fit of the vehicle’s safety belt system. Some booster seats have a shoulder belt positioner, and some high-back booster seats have a five-point harness. A booster seat can also help a child to see out the window.

    When choosing a child restraint, be sure the child restraint is designed to be used in a vehicle. If it is, it will have a label saying that it meets federal motor vehicle safety standards. Then follow the instructions for the restraint. You may find these instructions on the restraint itself or in a booklet, or both.

    Cargo Vans The child restraint must be secured properly in the passenger seat. Never put a rear-facing child restraint in this vehicle. Here is why: CAUTION: A child in a rear-facing child restraint can be seriously injured or killed if the passenger’s airbag inflates.

Lower Anchorage In order to use the LATCH system in your vehicle, you need a child restraint designed for that system. With this system, use the LATCH system instead of the vehicle’s safety belts to secure a child restraint.

    To assist you in locating the lower anchors for this child restraint system, each seating position with the LATCH system has a visible metal anchorage point in the seat where the seatback meets the seat cushion. CAUTION: If a LATCH-type child restraint is not attached to its anchorage points, the restraint will not be able to protect the child correctly.

    4. To tighten the belt, push down on the child restraint, pull the shoulder portion of the belt to tighten the lap portion of the belt and feed the shoulder belt back into the retractor. If you are using a forward-facing child restraint, you may find it helpful to use your knee to push down on the child restraint as you tighten the belt.

    Airbag System Your vehicle has airbags – one airbag for the driver and another airbag for the right front passenger. Frontal airbags are designed to help reduce the risk of injury from the force of an inflating airbag. But these airbags must inflate very quickly to do their job and comply with federal regulations.

    The frontal airbags (driver and right front passenger) are not intended to inflate during vehicle rollovers, rear impacts, or in many side impacts because inflation would not likely help the occupants. In any particular crash, no one can say whether an airbag should have inflated simply because of the damage to a vehicle or because of what the repair costs were.
  • Page 69 The parts of the bag that come into contact with you may be warm, but not too hot to touch. There will be some smoke and dust coming from the vents in the deflated airbags. Airbag inflation does not prevent the driver from seeing or being able to steer the vehicle, nor does it stop people from leaving the vehicle.

    Servicing Your Airbag-Equipped Vehicle Airbags affect how your vehicle should be serviced. There are parts of the airbag system in several places around your vehicle.     Keys CAUTION: Leaving children in a vehicle with the ignition key is dangerous for many reasons. They could operate the power windows or other controls or even make the vehicle move. The children or others could be badly injured or even killed.
  • Page 75 This vehicle has one double-sided key for the ignition and door locks. It will fit with either side up. When a new vehicle is delivered, the dealer provides the owner with a pair of identical keys and a bar-coded tag. The bar-coded tag has a code on it that tells your dealer or a qualified locksmith how to make extra keys.

    Matching Transmitter(s) to Your Vehicle Each remote keyless entry transmitter is coded to prevent another transmitter from unlocking your vehicle. If a transmitter is lost or stolen, a replacement can be purchased through your dealer. Remember to bring any remaining transmitters with you when you go to your dealer.

    Doors and Locks Door Locks CAUTION: Unlocked doors can be dangerous. • Passengers — especially children — can easily open the doors and fall out of a moving vehicle. When a door is locked, the handle will not open it. You increase the chance of being thrown out of the vehicle in a crash if the doors are not locked.

    Power Door Locks If your vehicle has power door locks, press the power door lock switch located on the door panel to lock or unlock all the doors at once. The power door lock switch will lock or unlock the rear hatch and Dutch doors.

    You are now ready to program the automatic door locks. Select one of the following four programming options and follow the instructions. You will have thirty seconds to begin programming. If you exceed the thirty second limit, the locks will automatically lock and unlock to indicate that you have left the program mode.

    Sliding Door Security Lock Your vehicle may have this feature. A sliding door security lock helps to prevent young children or other passengers from opening the sliding door using the inside door handle. The security door lock is located near the front of the sliding door.
  • Page 82 Canceling the Sliding Door Security Lock To cancel the security lock, do the following: 1. Unlock the door and open it from the outside. 2. Move the lever all the way down. 2-10 CAUTION: If your vehicle is facing downward on a steep grade (15 percent or more), the door may not stay open and could slam shut, possibly injuring someone.

    Rear Doors If your vehicle has Dutch doors, you must open the hatch first. See “Hatch Release” later in this section. Rear doors can only be opened from the outside. Open the passenger’s side rear door first. Grasp the handle and pull the door open.
  • Page 84 To fully open the rear doors, push in on the clip and lift the check assembly up off the mounting bracket. Do this on each door. Replace the check assemblies on the mounting brackets before closing the doors. 2-12 CAUTION: It can be dangerous to drive with the rear glass open because carbon monoxide (CO) gas can come into your vehicle.
  • Page 85 Hatch Release You can use your key to unlock the hatch and all of the other doors from the outside. Insert the key into the hatch release button and turn it counterclockwise. All of the doors will unlock. You may also use the remote keyless entry transmitter. See Remote Keyless Entry System Operation on page 2-4.

    Windows CAUTION: Leaving children, helpless adults, or pets in a vehicle with the windows closed is dangerous. They can be overcome by the extreme heat and suffer permanent injuries or even death from heat stroke. Never leave a child, a helpless adult, or a pet alone in a vehicle, especially with the windows closed in warm or hot weather.

A cold fluid check can be made after the vehicle has been sitting for eight hours or more with the engine off, but this is used only as a reference.
