Using Stand by

For the Windows
XP Professional operating system when not connected to a
domain server, follow these steps to power down the
computer using the Stand by command:

Click Start, select Turn off computer.
The Turn off computer box appears.

Click Stand By.

The computer saves the status of all open programs and files
to memory, turns off the display, and goes into a low-power
mode. The on/off light blinks green to indicate the machine is
in Stand by mode.
NOTE: If you power down using the Stand by command and the
battery discharges fully, your information will be lost. Be sure to
save your work first.
For the Windows
connected to a domain server, follow these steps to power
down the computer using the Stand by command:

Click the Start button, then select Shut down.
The Shut Down Windows dialog box appears.
