Security-related functions
The chip card terminal has several security functions which ensure secure operation.
Secure PIN Entry (SPE)
Secure PIN Entry mode is signaled by the red flashing PIN LED.
In order to ensure the integrity and authenticity of the entered PIN, the Secure PIN Entry mode (SPE)
is executed with the functions "Secure PIN Entry" and "Memory Reprocessing".
The Secure PIN Entry mode is started by the application software through an explicit CT command
[CCID] [6]. This ensures that the entered PIN is transferred directly to the signature card after
intermediate storage in the RAM, and that the memory area required for processing in the controller is
deleted again when the SPE mode is exited.
Secure PIN Entry mode is signaled by the red flashing PIN LED.
Only asterisks are transmitted to the PC and/or the application software in order to display the
progress as the PIN is entered.
This ensures that the entered PIN never leaves the terminal as plain text.
The table below details the functions and keys with which the PIN entry can be edited and/or
confirmed.
The PIN can only be entered via the numerical keys on the numerical keypad:
