Introduction

when servicing the vehicle, park
on a flat level surface, set the
parking brake, turn the engine off,
and install wheel chocks.

If unit starts in gear, the vehicle

To be sure your vehicle is ready to
operate, conduct a pre-trip
inspection at the beginning of each
work period. This section gives the
operator suggested guidelines to be
used in performing tractor and trailer
pre-trip inspections. Safety is the
most important and obvious reason
for doing a pre-trip inspection.
Depending on the optional features
of the vehicle being used and any
possible aftermarket items installed
on the vehicle, these guidelines
should be modified to include other
necessary inspection points. Follow
the steps in this section and check
them off to ensure a proper vehicle
inspection procedure. The pages in
this section may be reproduced
locally and used on a regular basis.
If any component or system does
not pass this inspection, it must be
corrected before operating the
vehicle. Take your time going
through the pre-trip inspection.
Remember that a careful pre-trip
inspection saves time by eliminating
unscheduled stops to correct a
faulty item.
Vehicle Inspection
Preparation
Perform the following tasks prior to
conducting the pre-trip inspection.
Apply the parking brake.
Turn on the parking lamps and
hazard warning flashers.
Unhook the hood latches and
raise the hood. Inspect both
hood latches to confirm proper
operation.
Check under the vehicle for oil,
fuel, coolant leaks, or other
signs of damage.
