Crankshaft Assembly
Removal
1. Remove the cyl inder heads, cylinders, and
pistons.
2. To remove the fan hous ing and engine mount
plate d isconnect the COl w ires and remove the
lighting co il wires from the connector plug. Be
sure to mark the connector so the w ires for the
lighting coi l are reconnected correct ly. Re -
move the nuts securing the fan hous ing and
lift the entire assembly off of the crankcase .

3 . Scribe a mark on the stator plate and the
crankcase boss to assure proper indexing
during reassemb ly. (See Figure 3-78.)

4. Remove the screws securing stator plate to the
crankc ase and remove the stator plate .
5. Drain the gear case assemb ly. Remove the
bo lts securi ng t he gear case cover to the
crankcase and remove the cover. Remove the
id ler . gear, spacers and idle shaft.
6. Remove the driven gear from the oil pu mp
shaft and remove the oil pump.
7. Remove the bolts securing the crankcase
halves together. Remove the lower crankcase
from the upper crankcase.
8. Use a mallet or a soft hammer to brea k the
crankcase seal and separate the two ha lves .

9. Lift t he crankshaft assemb ly straight up and
out of the crankcase.
