Listening to Songs Using the Remote You can use the included remote control to conveniently play/stop a song or to select songs. You can also use the remote to switch the image of the external display or television, or assign frequently used functions to the remote buttons. Singing Along with the VIMA You can connect a microphone to the VOCAL jack and use the VIMA for karaoke or for singing along with your own playing. Since the VIMA has two VOCAL jacks, you can connect two mics simultaneously for a duet. You can also apply echo to the sound of the microphone, and add effects (vocal effects) for additional enjoyment.
Adjusting the Volume of the Microphone You can adjust the volume of the sound from the microphone. Singing Along with the VIMA Changing the Song to a Key that’s Comfortable for Singing (KEY CONTROL) The “Key Control” function lets you play back a song at a different key. This is convenient when you’re singing along with the song, since you can shift the playback to a key that’s comfortable for the range of your voice.
Enjoying Karaoke with a Music CD (CENTER CANCEL) You can minimize the vocal sounds of a commercially available music CD, and sing the vocal part yourself. This is a convenient way to enjoy karaoke or practice soloing with a favorite music CD.
Singing Along with the VIMA Muting the Melody of an Internal Song or Music Files for a Sing-along (Melody Mute) The “Melody Mute” function lets you temporarily mute the melody from the playback of an internal song or of music files. Let’s try singing the melody while you listen to the song. There’s also a “Melody Guide function”...
Decreasing the Melody Volume of a Song (Melody Guide) The “Melody Guide” function lets you decrease the volume of the melody of an internal song or SMF music files. Using this function, you can decrease the melody to a lower (but still audible) level, helping you to learn the melody while you sing along.

Watching a Slide Show with Digital Camera Photos Photos of your vacation or of your family can be displayed as a slide show on the large screen of a television or display connected to the VIMA. Simply use a USB cable included with your digital camera to connect your digital camera to the VIMA.

Specifying the Transition Time Between Images When you press a video function select button to switch the image that’s displayed, the currently displayed image will fade to black, and the image to be displayed next will appear gradually. Performing Performing with Sounds that Match the Song (Recommended Tones) When playing along on the keyboard while listening to an internal song or a CD-ROM made for the VIMA (VIMA TUNES), this function lets you play using instrumental sounds that are appropriate for the atmosphere of the selected song. When you select an internal song or a song from a CD-ROM made for the VIMA (VIMA TUNES), sounds suitable for that song will automatically be assigned to the three buttons [1], [2], and [3].

In the bottom of the screen, touch <Recommend> tab. The three recommended tones will be shown in the screen. The same three recommended tones will also be selected for the [1], [2], and [3] INSTRUMENT buttons. Select the tone you want to play. You can either touch one of the three tone buttons in the screen, or press the [1], [2], or [3] button.
Performing Performing with Your Favorite Sounds (User Tones) The VIMA contains the tones of numerous instruments in addition to the seven tones accessible through the INSTRUMENT buttons. From this large selection of internal instruments, you can select and assign your favorite tones to the [1] button, [2] button, and [3] button.

Performing Selecting User Tones Access the main screen. If the main screen is not shown, press the [EXIT] button several times to access the main screen. In the bottom of the screen, touch <USER> tab. The screen will show the three tones that are currently assigned as user tones. These three tones are also assigned to the [1], [2], and [3] INSTRUMENT buttons of the panel.
Sounding a Count to Keep your Timing Accurate If you’re playing along with a song, you can sound a count to make it easier to synchronize your own playing with the song. A “count-in” is a count that is sounded before the song begins to play.
Performing Adjusting the Volume Balance Between the Song and Keyboard You can adjust the volume balance between the song that’s playing and your performance on the keyboard. If you’re performing along with the playback of a song, lowering the volume of the song will make it easier for you to hear your own keyboard performance.

Settings Other Settings Restoring the Factory-set Condition (Factory Reset) You can restore the settings you’ve changed on the VIMA to their factory-set condition. This operation is called “Factory Reset.” When you perform a Factory Reset, all the settings NOTE you have stored will be erased, and the VIMA will return to the factory-set condition.
Initializing User Memory (Format User Memory) The VIMA has an internal storage area in which you can store your recorded performances. This area is called “user memory.” The songs you save in “Favorites” are held in this user memory (p. 44). If you want to erase the entire contents of user memory and restore it to the factory-set condition, execute the following procedure.

Connecting Other Equipment Connecting Audio Equipment By connecting the VIMA to your audio equipment or external speakers, you can play the VIMA’s sounds from your stereo system’s speakers or from other external speakers, or record your performance on an tape recorder or other recording device.
Playing the Sound of an Audio Device through the VIMA fig.audio2.eps Minimize the volume of the VIMA and of the audio device you are connecting. Switch off power to the VIMA and the audio device you are connecting. Make connections using separately available audio cables.
For example, you can play one device from the keyboard of another device, or switch sounds remotely. What’s MIDI? “MIDI” stands for “Musical Instrument Digital Interface.” It is a universal standard that allows performance data to be exchanged among electronic musical instruments and computers.
Normally, you don’t need to install a driver in order to connect the VIMA to your computer. However, if some problem occurs, or if the performance is poor, using the Roland original driver may solve the problem. For details on downloading and installing the Roland original driver, refer to the Roland website.
