Dolphin Tech Notes: Recommend Camera settings—Nikon D1
Updated: 7/7/2000 (OC)
These instructions are intended to supplement the Nikon DIGITAL DAMERA D1 User's Manual (part
number 6ME49510). Please refer to the manual for more details on each function.
Settings for Sunpak Auto DX 8R ring flash and Nikon AF Micro Nikkor 60mm lens (a 62mm-52mm ring
step down ring adapter is necessary from the ring flash to the lens).
Presets (leave the camera ALWAYS in these settings)
Image Quality (page 28): FINE (recommended, approx 1.3MB per picture), NORM or BASIC. (HI or
high image quality, no compression in TIFF RGB/TIFF YcbCr or RAW data is necessary)
Sensitivity (ISO Equivalency) (page 30): 400
White Balance (page 31): Sun (for a warmer tone), or Flash (for a 'cooler' or more purple tone)
Autofocus (page 33): Single servo AF
AF Area Mode (page 34): Single area AF
Mode: M (Manual) (page 47)
Exposure compensation (page 51): 0.0 (or, if necessary, adjust to the proper brightness--less the
number, brighter the picture) We recommend that you use the same Exposure Compensation number
between the facials and intraoral shots to minimize changes.
Capture Preview Mode (page 56): we recommend using the capture-preview mode to view
photographs in the LCD monitor before they are saved to the memory card. With the CSM button held
down, rotate the sub-command dial to set the menu option to "1" ("capture-preview mode enabled"). To
record the photograph: press the CSM button. To delete the photograph (before it is recorded to the
memory card): half-press the shutter-release button, or press the "trash can" or "AF-ON" button.
Diopter Adjustment (page 63): the viewfinder is equipped with diopter adjustment to accommodate
individual differences in vision. Be sure to adjust the diopter for your vision.
Facials
Flash: (using the Sunpak ), set on Full power
(AC adapter highly recommended)
Lens: auto focus recommended, but possible to
use manual focus if high consistency in size is
desirable (Manual focus ~ 8ft)
Camera:
Speed: 40 (1/40 sec.)
Aperture: F14
Notes: please wait for the flash to FULLY
CHARGE before capturing the picture

Intraorals
Flash: 1/16 power
Lens: auto focus, OR, manual focus @ 1-1/2 ft
(or select a fixed distance to a size that is
acceptable—might need to alter Aperture setting
as a result)
Camera:
Speed: 40 (adjust to brightness; your
particular environment and condition may
vary; the lower the number, lighter the
picture; but, if it's too low, say around 10,
you'll get fuzzy images, because the shutter
will stay open too long.)
Aperture: F29 (adjust to brightness; your
particular environment and condition may
vary; the lower the number, brighter the
picture; but, try to keep the aperture number
high because you want more depth of field for
the close up shot)
