Additional Health and Safety Information Consumer Information on Wireless Phones from the FDA The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) provides consumer information on wireless phones at: http://www.fda.gov/cellphones/qa.html Following are safety-related questions and answers discussed at this web site. Do wireless phones pose a health hazard? The available scientific evidence does not show that any health problems are associated with using wireless phones.
  • Page 127 What is FDA's role concerning the safety of wireless phones? Under the law, FDA does not review the safety of radiation- emitting consumer products such as wireless phones before they can be sold, as it does with new drugs or medical devices. FDA shares regulatory responsibilities for wireless phones with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). All phones that are sold in the United States must comply with FCC safety guidelines that limit RF exposure. FCC relies on FDA and other health agencies for safety questions about wireless phones.
  • Page 129 FDA and the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association (CTIA) have a formal Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) to do research on wireless phone safety. FDA provides the scientific oversight, obtaining input from experts in government, industry, and academic organizations. CTIA-funded research is conducted through contracts to independent investigators.
  • Page 130 What about children using wireless phones? The scientific evidence does not show a danger to users of wireless phones, including children and teenagers. If you want to take steps to lower exposure to radio frequency energy (RF), the measures described above would apply to children and teenagers using wireless phones.
  • Page 131 required to meet safety requirements regardless of whether they are used against the head or against the body. Either configuration should result in compliance with the safety limit.
