QuickStart Guide

C-740 Ultra Zoom
START HERE
It is strongly recommended that you follow these step-by-step
numbered instructions to set up and quickly begin using your
new Digital camera.
For more detailed instructions on advanced features, please refer to
the printed Basic Manual included in your package, or the Reference
Manual on the CD-ROM.

PREPARING THE CAMERA FOR USE

Before you begin using your Olympus Digital camera...
a.
Loading the batteries
Note: The batteries and xD-Picture Card
compartments are accessed by opening the
respective compartment covers.
• Slide the battery compartment lock from = to ).
• Slide the battery compartment cover in the direction of the arrow, and lift open the cover.
• Insert the batteries into the compartment with their indentations facing each other.
When loading four AA (R6) type batteries, load them as indicated in the
illustration on the camera body.
• Close the battery compartment cover and slide the battery compartment lock from
) to =.
• To remove the batteries, make sure that the camera is turned off (the monitor and
the viewfinder are off and the lens is not extended).

TURNING ON THE CAMERA

The camera Mode dial is used to select the various operation modes.

Turning the camera ON
• Press the tabs on the lens cap to remove it.
• Set the mode dial to h. Press the power switch. The lens extends and the viewfinder turns on.
• To turn the camera off, press the power switch again.
TIP
:To maximize battery life, the Digital camera features a power saving mode in which the camera enters a sleep mode after
approximately three (3) minutes of non-use.

Setting the Date and Time
Set the date and time before using the camera for the first time. This affects the way image file names are
created, and will conveniently include this information with each picture.
• Set the mode dial to P and press the power switch to turn the camera on.
• Press e. The top menu is displayed.
• Press d on the arrow pad to select MODE MENU.
• Press ac to select the SETUP tab, then press d.
• Press ac to select X, then press d.
• Use ac to select the date format.
• Adjust the date and time in the appropriate fields by using d to select the field, and ac to set the proper value.
Repeat this step until all date/time fields have been set.
Note: Time is entered using the 24-hour format.

UNPACKING THE BOX CONTENTS

Gather your Digital camera and the parts as shown in the illustration. You'll need these to complete the steps for the camera
set-up procedures that follow.

Inserting the xD-Picture Card
The xD-Picture Card is where the camera stores your pictures and
is available in a variety of memory capacities. The pictures you take
with the camera remain on the xD-Picture Card even when the
camera is turned off and/or the batteries are removed.
• Open the card cover.
• Face the card the correct way and insert it into the spring-loaded card
slot as shown in the illustration. Push the card fully into the slot. The
card will lock into place when fully inserted.
Battery compartment
• Close the card cover securely.

Confirm you have installed the batteries and xD-Picture Card properly by setting the mode
dial to q and pressing the power switch. The "NO PICTURE" message should be displayed
in the monitor. Turn the camera off by pressing the power switch again.
Note: To remove, push the card all the way in to unlock it, then let it return slowly.

Attaching the strap and lens cap string
Attach the lens cap string and strap to the strap eyelets on each side of the camera as
illustrated. Attaching the strap to the camera makes it easier to handle.

Do not use your fingernail as this could result in injury. Insert the batteries, making sure that they are correctly oriented as shown in the illustration.
  • Page 14 INSERTING A CARD “Card” in this manual refers to the xD-Picture Card. The camera uses the card to record pictures. Make sure the camera is turned off. • The monitor is off. • The viewfinder is off. • The lens is not extended. Open the card cover.
  • Page 15 Removing the card Push the card all the way in to unlock it, then let it return slowly. • The card is ejected a short way and then stops. Hold the card straight and pull it out. Note Releasing your finger quickly after pushing the card all the way in may cause it to eject forcefully out of the slot.

    To turn the camera off, press the power switch again. • To save battery power, the camera automatically enters the sleep mode and stops the operation after about 3 minutes of non- Note operation. The camera activates again as soon as you operate the shutter button or zoom lever.

    MENU FUNCTIONS USING THE MENUS AND TABS When you turn on the camera and press e, the top menu is displayed on the monitor (or viewfinder). The functions of this camera are set from the menus. This chapter explains how the menus work, using the P mode screens. The top menu is displayed.

DIGITAL ZOOM Extends the maximum optical zoom, making possible up to approx. 30x zoom. Sets the image quality and resolution.

  • Page 21 Selects the auto focus method (iESP or SPOT). Allows pictures to be taken as close as 3 cm/1.2" from the subject. Allows panorama pictures to be taken with Olympus PANORAMA CAMEDIA-brand cards. Combines two still pictures taken in succession and 2 IN 1 stores them as a single picture.

    SHOOTING BASICS Mode dial The shooting modes include modes where the optimal settings for the situation are automatically selected, and modes where you can select the settings best suited to the shooting conditions and the effect you wish to achieve. You can change the shooting mode before and after turning the camera on.
  • Page 25 k Landscape+Portrait shooting Suitable for taking pictures of both your subject and the landscape. The picture is taken with the background as well as the subject in the foreground in focus. You can take pictures of your subject against a beautiful sky or landscape.
  • Page 26 p Aperture priority/Shutter priority/Manual shooting When the mode dial is set to p, the following items can be set with the menus. A Aperture priority shooting Allows you to set the aperture manually. The camera sets the shutter speed automatically. Press a to increase the aperture value (f number).
  • Page 27 TAKING STILL PICTURES You can take still pictures using either the viewfinder or the monitor. Both methods are easy as all you have to do is to press the shutter button. Set the mode dial to h i j k l m o r p P and press the power switch.
  • Page 28 IF CORRECT FOCUS CANNOT BE OBTAINED (FOCUS LOCK) When the subject cannot be focused on, you can focus the camera on another point at roughly the same distance (focus lock) and take the picture as explained below. Position the AF target mark on the F2.8 F2.8 subject you want to focus on.

    ADVANCED SHOOTING SEQUENTIAL SHOOTING There are 4 sequential shooting modes: sequential shooting, high speed sequential shooting, AF sequential shooting and auto bracketing. Sequential shooting modes can be selected from the DRIVE mode menu. Sequential shooting cannot be performed when the record mode is set to TIFF.

    AE LOCK This function is suitable for situations when optimal exposure is difficult to achieve, such as when there is excessive contrast between the subject and the surroundings. MACRO MODE SHOOTING Focusing is usually slow when you get close to a subject (W: 7 cm/2.8" to 60 cm/2.0 ft., T: 1.2 m/3.9 ft.

    Pull the zoom lever toward T. • Each time you pull the zoom lever, the picture is enlarged gradually. • To return the picture to the original size (1x), push the zoom lever toward W. Index display This function lets you show several pictures at the same time on the monitor. It is useful for quickly finding the picture you want to view.

    When FRAME BY FRAME is selected a : Displays the first frame of the movie. c : Displays the last frame of the movie. : Displays the next frame. The movie can be played continuously by holding the button down. : Displays the previous frame.
  • Page 37 FORMATTING (CARD SETUP) This function lets you format a card. Formatting prepares cards to receive data. Before using non-Olympus cards or cards which have been formatted on a PC, you must format them with this camera. • All existing data, including protected data, is erased when the card is formatted.

    PLAYBACK ON A TV Use the video cable provided with the camera to play back recorded images on your TV. Make sure that the TV and camera are turned off. Connect the Video OUT jack on the camera to the Video input terminal on the TV using the video cable.

    PRINT SETTINGS By specifying the desired number of prints of each picture on the card and whether or not the date and time are to be printed, you can print out the desired pictures according to the print reservation data with a DPOF- compatible printer or at a DPOF photo lab.

    DOWNLOADING PICTURES TO A COMPUTER By connecting the camera to a computer with the provided USB cable, images on a card can be transferred to the computer. Some OS’s (operating systems) may need a special setup before connecting to the camera for the first time.
