B. Engines with Recoil Starters
If you have an electric starter see "A. Engines with Electric
Starters" instructions on page 6. Only one of the following
two sections will apply to your engine. See Table 4.

If your engine has:
Combined Speed and Choke Controls
Independent Speed and Choke Controls

Combined Speed and Choke Control
1. To avoid carbon monoxide poisoning, be sure engine is
outdoors in a well-ventilated area.
2. Move combined control to "CHOKE" or "START" posi-
tion, if present (see equipment manufacturer's instruc-
tions). See Figures 13 and 14.
If restarting a warm engine after a short shutdown, move
combined Control to "FAST" instead of "CHOKE" or
"START" position. See Figures 13 and 14.
When pulling starter rope, the rope

can unexpectedly jerk back toward
engine causing serious injury. To avoid this risk, carefully
follow these instructions:
3. Grasp starter cord handle. See Figure 15.
a. Pull rope out slowly until you feel drag.
b. Without allowing the rope to retract, continue
pulling rope with one rapid full arm stroke.
c. Return rope slowly to original position.
Following the instructions listed in the steps above avoids
potential damage to the recoil mechanism.
If engine fails after 3 pulls repeat steps 2 thru 3.
4. When engine starts:
d. Move combined control to "FAST" position.
e. Next, move combined control to desired speed in
"RUN" range. See Figure 13. See Figure 14.
If engine starts, but falters when combined control is moved
to "FAST" position:
a. Momentarily move combined control back to
"CHOKE" position.
