When installing a shelf over the top of the fireplace, the following
guidelines must be adhered to: The minimum clearance from the top of
the fireplace to a shelf is 5".

WARNING:
When this appliance is installed directly on carpeting, tile
or any combustible material other than wood flooring, it
must be installed on a metal or wood panel extending the
full width and depth of the appliance.

Installation

Clearances
These clearances apply to all dimensions except the framed opening,
where the clearance to combustibles is 0". The C38-VF clearances to
combustible materials are:
* When sheetrock is
not used behind the
fireplace, framing
depth may be
reduced to 16 7/8"
Unprotected combustible walls which are perpendicular to the fireplace
opening, must fall within the limits outlined in Figure 7b.
For protection against freezing temperatures, it is recommended that
outer walls of the chase be insulated with a vapour barrier. This will
reduce the possibility of a cold-air convection current on the fireplace.
Space Requirements
This heater must not be installed in a confined space or unusually tight
construction unless provisions are made for adequate combustion and
ventilation air.
The National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1, defines a confined space as
a space whose volume is less than 50 cubic feet per 1,000 BTU per
hour (4.8 m
installed in that space and an unconfined space as a space whose
volume is not less than 50 cubic feet per 1,000 BTU per hour (4.8 m
per kw) of the aggregate input rating of all appliances installed in that
space. Rooms communicating directly with the space in which all the
appliances are installed, through openings not furnished with doors, are
considered a part of the unconfined space.
Example:
If you are installing this fireplace in a rectangular room which measures
14' × 16' × 8' in height, that room will have a volume of 1792 cu. ft. (ft
If there is no other appliances in the room which consume oxygen, then
the maximum BTU fireplace which can be installed in such a room is
35,840 BTU (1792 ft
which this fireplace can be installed is equal to:

Therefore this heater may be installed in the minimum space
described above.
