Figure 13: vRanger backup job options
Particular attention should be paid to the following options:
Compress backed up files should not be enabled. The compression process effectively randomizes the backup data
stream, which results in a reduced deduplication ratio on the StoreOnce Backup System and a slower backup job.
The StoreOnce Backup System will compress the backup data after deduplicating it to improve the Repository
utilization.
Enable guest quiescing can optionally be enabled if your virtual machines have VMware Tools installed and are
VSS enabled (Windows only). Selecting this option means vRanger will request VMware tools to initiate a VSS
snapshot in the guest operating system to create a recovery consistent backup.
Enable Active Block Mapping (ABM) should be enabled, which will reduce the data sent to StoreOnce Backup
System by not including deleted blocks in the backup stream.
Perform LAN-free backup should be selected if vRanger is configured in Hot Add mode and installed on a virtual
machine (Figure 2) or in Physical Proxy mode (Figure 3). Do not use this if you want to use a Service Console mode
(Figure 4).
Perform network backup on LAN-Free failure enables failover to network-based backups if a LAN-Free backup fails.
