IRING & TESTING
INSTALLING COMPONENT SPEAKERS
Component speakers are used to ensure a no-compromise performance
of the woofer and tweeter. Each component is able to be acoustically
optimized and independently located as compared to a coaxial which has
many trade-offs.
The objectives of component speaker mounting include:
Positioning the speakers for best left/right balance, front imaging, and
frequency response.
Mounting both the tweeter and woofer to a solid surface to prevent
buzzing a rattling. Also, you do not want to have the speaker banging
around in the door.
Make sure there are no air leaks between the front and back of the
woofer cone to prevent bass loss. Poor air seals results in a "hollow" or
"muffled" sound quality from the woofer.
Protect the speakers from the environment. Water is shed from most
door speakers easily but if allowed to "pool" is can easy soak and rot
the spider and rust the basket and back plate assemblies.
Ensure the wiring is correct. Woofers out of phase with other woofers in
the vehicle create a "phasy" sound. Tweeters out of phase create a
notch in the frequency response also.
WIRING THE SYSTEM
Your Blaupunkt speakers have crossovers with clearly marked terminals
and keyed spade lugs for connecting to the speakers. Be sure to use
them to ensure proper polarity and reliable long term electrical
connection. The crossover provided is optimized for these speakers. If
you chose to by-pass the crossover, a crossover point of 4 kHz and 12
dB/octave active filter should be used. DO NOT use alternative passive
units - they may flip phase and overdrive the tweeter assemblies.
As for the vehicle, speaker wiring MUST ALWAYS be isolated from the electrical system and chassis. It should also be
routed away from any factory computers and high current wiring to prevent stray noise pick-up into the speakers. Finally, be
sure to maintain impedance loads equal or greater than the minimum values allowed by the radio or amplifier.
FINAL SETTINGS
The Blaupunkt crossover provides for small "trimming" of the tweeter gain
and crossover frequency. Tweeters mounted high the door or dash
usually requires less gain so the "-3dB" setting drops the volume
accordingly. Similarly, the frequency where the tweeter "comes in" can be
set and this is purely personal.
SYSTEM TEST
Once installed, turn on the radio and SLOWLY turn up the volume while
playing a favorite music track.
If the music is heavily distorted or occasionally drops out check for
short circuits of the wires to the vehicle chassis or to themselves.
If nothing is heard at all, but the power lights come on the amp, check
input signal lines to the amp then all connections between the amp and
speaker for open or short circuits.
If the system still does not turn on at all, contact Blaupunkt technical
support at our number on the warranty page.
