14. 2 Obtaining blood and testing blood glucose

1. Remove the coloured cap from the lancing
device.
2. Insert a new lancet into the lancing device
as described in the instructions for use of
the Accu-Chek Compact Plus meter.
3. Attach the clear plastic AST cap. As with
the coloured cap, the locating notch in the
cap (1) must be directly aligned with the
locating line on the lancing device (2).
The AST cap must click into place.
For blood collection, the AST cap must be on the lancing device.
i
Without this cap, the lancing device cannot be primed, nor can
the lancet be triggered. Instead, the lancet is ejected when you
press the plunger.
4. Rotate the cap until you reach your cho-
sen penetration depth.

To obtain a sufficiently large drop of
blood from alternate sites, lancing
must be deeper than on the fingertips.
However, these sites are usually less
painful.

5. Choose a fleshy area of the alternate site for blood collection and
wash it with warm, soapy water. This ensures that the puncture site is
clean. Allow the skin to dry thoroughly.
6. Prime the lancing device.
7. Press the AST cap firmly against the selected puncture site.
8. Press the plunger all the way down. This triggers the lancet, which
penetrates the skin.
9. Keep the lancing device pressed against
the puncture site for a few seconds.
You can watch the drop of blood form
through the AST cap. The drop of blood
should be approximately this size:
If the drop is smaller, release the pressure
for a few seconds, without removing the lancing device from the punc-
ture site. Then re-apply pressure on the lancing device until you get a
sufficiently large drop of blood.
Too much blood emerging can contaminate the AST cap. For
hygienic reasons, the AST cap should be cleaned immediately
after testing your blood glucose (see chapter "Cleaning the AST
cap").
10. Press the Test button to turn the meter on.
