  • Page 3 HOW TO USE THIS BOOKLET This manual contains detailed instructions on the operation and maintenance of this copier. Please keep this manual in a handy place near the machine. If you want to make a copy using the manual feed tray turn to page 3. If you want to use the sheet feeder, turn to page 14.

    COPYING 1. Starting the Copier About seven minutes are required from power on until the copier warms up and copying is possible. Switch the copier on in the morning and off when the work day is finished. 1–1. Switching on the copier 1.

    1–2. Switching off the copier 1. If copying is under way, wait until it Clear/Stop finishes or press the Clear/Stop key to cancel copying. Turning off the copier during copying may cause a paper misfeed or machine failure. 2. Turn off the main switch. Leave the copier plugged in if you use it often.

    2. Copying with Manual Feed Manual feed refers to making copies by placing copy paper on the manual feed table. The method explained here does not use the sheet or roll feeders (optional equipment). Avoid using inappropriate paper (see page 51). 1.
  • Page 7 4. Check that the Insert Original indi- cator is lit. 5. Adjust the original guide to match the size and direction of the original. 6. Insert the original face up and straight along the original guide. The copier automatically feeds the original in.
  • Page 8 8. Adjust the copy paper guide to the desired paper size and direction (lengthwise or sideways). 9. Insert the copy paper. When the original and the copy paper are set, copying starts automatically. To cancel copying, press the Clear/Stop Clear/Stop key once. (You may also cancel copying by pressing the Stop key on the indica- tor panel.

    3. Adjusting Copy Density The Auto Image Density function automatically adjusts the density of the copy to keep dark backgrounds from appearing. This function is active when you turn on the machine, or when you press the Stand-by/Clear Modes key or Auto Image Density key.
  • Page 10 4. Changing Copy Exit You can change the copy exit direction to match the paper size. Use the lower copy exit for larger copy paper. This will prevent paper from hindering copying or from becoming crumpled. Press the Copy Exit key on the opera- tion panel.

    6. Clearing the Modes If you want to clear all the modes you have manually selected, use the Stand- by/Clear Modes key. Pressing the Stand-by/Clear Modes key cancels the copy density, number of copies, leading edge, and trailing edge margin settings. If the machine is idle for two minutes, modes are cleared automatically.

    9. Using The Rear Table Use the rear table to copy originals that can’t or shouldn’t be bent, such as cardboard or paper between 0.0075 and 0.04 inch thick (0.19 and 1.00 mm). The synchro cut and repeat copy functions can’t be used with the rear table. Follow the procedure outlined for manual feed, page 3, with these differences: 1.

    OPTIONAL FUNCTIONS 1. Copying with the Sheet Feeder If you want to copy by using the sheet feeder, check that copy paper is set inside the paper tray. If there is no paper on the paper tray (the Add Paper indicator is lit) or if you want to change the paper size, load the desired size paper.

    2. Copying with the Roll Feeder There are two roll feeder copy functions: synchro cutting and preset cutting. You can also use the roll feeder to cut paper without copying. 2–1. Synchro cutting The roll feeder feeds paper to the copier and automatically cuts it to match the length of the original.

    2–2. Preset cutting The roll feeder cuts the paper to a specified length and feeds the paper to the copier. There are five settings, based on the A size series. Preset length Roll width Paper size 48" 36" E lengthwise 48"...
  • Page 21 3. Set other modes, insert the original, and copying will begin automatically. 2–3. Roll Cutter Function Using the roll feeder, you can cut a length of paper between 11 inches and 12 feet (280 and 3600 mm) without copying. 18" 1.

    REPLENISHING SUPPLIES 1. Setting Copy Paper on the Paper Tray of the Sheet Feeder The Add Paper indicator lights when there is no copy paper inside the paper tray on the sheet feeder. Set copy paper on the paper tray. For best perform- ance, use only recommended paper.
  • Page 25 3. While pressing the paper set plate tabs on both sides, release the lock. 4. Lift the paper set plate until it locks in position. 5. Set the trailing edge of the paper stack against the rear stopper. 6. Insert the leading edge of the paper stack into the copy paper turn guide unit.
  • Page 26 7. While holding the paper set plate tabs on both sides, push down the paper set plate until it locks in posi- tion. 8. Close the paper tray. When you have finished, the Add Pa- per indicator turns off and the Ready indicator lights.
  • Page 27 2. Open the roll feeder cover. 3. Pull the release handle to release the lock and open the paper feed roller cover. 4. Remove the paper spool. 5. While holding the paper release lever on the left end of the paper spool, remove the roll paper core from the paper spool.

Place the leading edge of the roll paper on the paper guide plate. Make sure that the leading edge is po- sitioned straight by aligning it with the size indication lines on the guide plate.
  • Page 29 10. Close the roll paper cover. 11. Pull the roll paper release lever once and lower the roll feeder until it locks in position. When the roll feeder, paper cover, and paper feed roller cover are all properly set, the Load Roll Paper indicator and the Cover Open indicator turn off and the Ready indicator lights.

    3. Adding Toner The Add Toner indicator blinks when toner is running short. It is continuously lit when toner has run out. About 16 feet (5 m) of paper can be copied after blinking starts, but part of some copies may be blurred, so replace the toner cartridge as soon as possible.
  • Page 31 4. Put the depleted cartridge in a vinyl bag and discard it. Warning: Do not incinerate the toner cartridge. Toner dust may ignite suddenly. 5. Shake the new toner cartridge lightly five to ten times to remove lumps. 6. Install the right end of new toner cartridge.
  • Page 32 8. Grasp the right edge of the seal and slowly remove it. 9. Turn the toner cartridge as shown in the illustration until the white circle labeled 2 is aligned with the white mark on the toner replenishment unit. 10. Push the toner cartridge to the left until the white line on the toner car- tridge is no longer visible.
  • Page 33 12. Close the original table. The Wait indicator will light. After the machine warms up, the Ready indicator will light and copying will be possible.

    FUNCTIONS THAT CAN BE RESET Copying needs may vary. For flexibility, some functions, listed below, can be reset. To reset any of these functions, contact your service representative. 1. Changing the Auto Clear time If the machine is idle for about two minutes, all settings are cleared. This is called Auto Clear.

    TROUBLESHOOTING The following problems can usually be cleared by the operator. If the problem cannot be solved by the following actions, call your service representative. 1. Nothing Happens When the Switch is Turned On Check the power cord. Is it properly in the main outlet? Plug it in firmly. Check that all covers are properly closed.
  • Page 36 3-2. Blurred Copies The possible causes for blurred copies may be as follows: - Copy density is too light - Reduce copy density. For details, see "Adjusting Copy Density" . - Toner is running short - The Add Toner indicator blinks when toner is running short. Blurred copies may result.

    DAILY MAINTENANCE To maintain the best copy quality, clean the exposure glass and the platen roller. - Exposure Glass - Clean the exposure glass with a damp cloth and wipe it with a dry cloth. - Platen Roller - Clean the platen roller with a damp cloth.
